  • I did not think of the connection between the A.J. Duckhorn Vineyard (in the Russian River Valley) and the Napa-based winery with the excellent reputation for Merlots.  I guess we have to ask our man in the Russian River Valley, Outthere, for some clarification or elucidation. Read More

  • Contiinuing my recent theme of drinking wines picked up during winery visits. Can you read that part on the label that says "Dry Riesling?"  Well, that's a lie. believe me when I tell you there is very detectable residual sugar here.  Lying label notwithstanding this is a reasonably good wine.  Lots of upfront apricot fruit and some honey.  Not ... • How about a Cabernet Sauvignon from Arizona?  We had a bottle of the 2011 "Dala" from Arizona Stronghold Vineyards and this wine is associated with a singer from the band called Tool (which we like quite a bit  - check this out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hg3kL5QHlVA ).  Anyway, I've had better cabs of course but Sandra likes this one.   Read More

  • Blue Mountain Pinot Blanc 2014

The flagship white from BM falls once again into a category of excellence: there is fresh, snappy apple and pear on the nose with a hint of vanilla. The entry is fresh, with vanilla-apple-spice mid-palate with a balance that suggests a hint of acidity and steel in otherwise heavenly spring water. With a medium finish, and thirst-quenching attr... • Jam Jar Sweet Shiraz 2015

One thing the label got right for certain is 'sweet'. A bit dry, oaken finish, it's a transitioning medley of these three in this order. Although not my thing, After one glass, the oak takes over for me and is no longer of interest. All depends on the character a person looks for in a wine I suppose. Read More

  • Wolff Vineyards Central Coast Dry Riesling 2013

The label says Dry, but I sure seem to detect RS, here. Lots of upfront fruitapricotand Im getting some honey flavors, also. As a result the wine seems to have a high viscosity mouthfeel. It also seems to lack characteristic Riesling acidit has some, but could use more. Not a hard wine to like, but not particularly compelling. Read More

  • OK, haven't put anything on here in a while, been consuming too many run of the mill wines recently. Not tonight however. This is a fantastic Italian white with a great background story. The wine is made by Cistercian nuns north of Rome. It's a blend of trebbiano, malvasia and verdicchio.  The nose comes across with some smoke and very ripe golde... Read More

  • JD, Mondeuse would definitely fit in here nicely, I still need to find some for myself.Mark, for me half the fun is the hunt. There are only about a half dozen decent wine stores here in Charlotte and I've gotten to know a lot of the folks that work in or own these places.  I think they really enjoy seeing a customer like me (I hope) who isn't j... • Domaine du Grangeon Chatus Ardèche 2011

Fascinating southern French (Ardeche) red made from the rare Chatus grape. The aromatics remind me of a GSM, ripe black cherry and a good bit of earthiness. There's plenty of ripe black and red fruit on the tongue along with leather, mushroom, oak and hint of black pepper. The tannins are quite drying but not grainy. The acidity is noticeable bu...
