Zuid Afrika Franschhoek the Wolftrap Shiraz Mourvedre Viognier 2009
I like this. It is simple and fresh with dark fruits. The nose is sort of woody and herbaceous. I could drink this regularly.
Lots of dark fruit flavors, the Mourvedre really stands out. Overall smooth and mellow, but finish is quite tart.
This is my first South African wine. So far, very nice. On the nose, musty, earthy, dark berries, leather, smoke. On the palate, classic syrah flavors. Dark fruit, spice/pepper, high acid. A lot of heat. Listing out at 14.5%. Wouldn't be surprised if it was higher. Relatively smooth finish. Would buy again.
3/4/13 Glad to finally try this..quite a lot of aromatics..like 2-3 feet or more away (viognier?) light and floral. Dark brown red color. Very low note, savoury, smoky cooked fruit but multi dimensional with the minor top notes. Bacon and red earth. Alcohol definitely creeping through and dominates the end of the smell. BBQ sauce? def. french oak.taste is fine grain, charred black strap molasses brisket and dark plum. semi sweet bright red cherry liqueur. alcohol is out of whack. i would say major pass except for with..smoked brisket! rather go with a comparatively priced Cotes du Rhone. Makes me think of a light sprinkling of fine ground, old pepper. hot! I taste the mourvedre the most (7/12), syrah, (4/12) and then viognier (1/12). Honestly kind of makes me sick to my stomach. Maybe would be better younger? I'm gonna stick with steen.
My first syrah (although this is a blend) and first South African wine. Very bold and spicy! Earthy and dark but smooth. I finished the bottle over the course of an evening. Will definitely buy again!

Abundance of black fruit flavours with hints of violet. Unpretentious easy drinking with smooth tannins and sweet berries on the palate.
