Zinfandel "Sonoma" Seghesio Trocken Usa California /Td Sonoma Seghesio 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

Our family roots are firmly planted in Zinfandel as our Great-Grandfather, Edoardo Seghesio, first planted Zinfandel on our Alexander Valley Home Ranch in 1895. Today, we share his passion as we farm over 400 acres of estate Zinfandel in the worlds best growing regions for the grape --- Alexander and Dry Creek Valleys. This wine combines sites that have produced Zinfandel for over a century with newer sites that utilize proprietary clones and the most advanced viticultural practices.<br/>

The Seghesio Family Vineyards have a rich history, dating back to 1895 when Edoardo Seghesio and his wife Angela purchased their home in Alexander Valley, part of Sonoma County. They didn’t buy the land for the house - they bought it for the 56 acres that were ideal vineyard land. That year, the land’s first grapes were planted - Zinfandel. In 1902, Seghesio Winery was founded, but the Seghesios didn’t stop there. In 1910 they acquired even more land, in the region known as Chianti, California. On that land, they planed Sangiovese, Canielao Nero, Trebbiano and Malvasia, making the it the oldest planting of Sangiovese in North America. Six months before Prohibition, Seghesio took a gamble and made a significant purchase - a 4,000,000 gallon capacity winery with 1,100 acres of vineyards from his former employer, Italian Swiss Colony. Unfortunately, Prohibition hit harder than Seghesio expected, and he was forced to completely sell off his shares in the winery by 1933. In 1983, the company changed drastically, when Ted and Peter Seghesio decided to shift the winery’s focus to high-quality production and much smaller lots, producing wine under the Seghesio label for the first time. Ted became the both the winemaker and the deliverer of wine, and with the help of Peter, a successful distribution network was formed. After tending to over 400 acres of vineyards across many regions, Seghesio Family Vineyards has become a large, successful vineyard with fourth generation winemakers. Read less

Jammy raspberry/blackberry nose. Full bodied, with rich red raspberry, blackberry, black pepper and licorice notes. 30+ second finish. Very nice, delicious wine.

Great value for the price. Smooth and silky on the palate compared to similar priced Zinfandels. Lovely raspberry flavor with hints of plum and cherry. Subtle pepper and spices. Medium tannins and balanced acidity.

Wine Spectator ReviewRated 93 #10 of Wine Spectator 2008 Top 100A seductive and vigorous Zinfandel, with smoky black cherry and blueberry aromas and youthful wild berry, sage and cracked pepper flavors that have a lingering finish and zesty tannins. Drink now through 2012.Wine Tasting NotesOur Sonoma Zin is a collage of Northern Sonomas vineyard landscape. While primarily estate grown, we purchase additional fruit from trusted growers to meet an ever-increasing demand for this notable wine. The extra steps we want growers to take to produce high quality fruit are not readily accepted by many. Our growers understand that timely canopy management throughout the growing season is required to produce high quality fruit. Hence, by embracing Seghesios more costly and time-consuming quality only viticultural standards, we find that the ultimate payoff, obviously, is in the bottle. Deftly masquerading as a Zin far more luxurious and sumptuous than its asking price, Sonomas juicy, ripe raspberry/cherry qualities and site-specific spicy, briery essence consistently hit the mark. Carefully extracted sweet oak mid-tones add texture, balance and length to the finish.

In 1895, the Seghesio family came to Sonoma and planted their first Zinfandel vines. This Sonoma Zinfandel is a collage of fruit from four estate-owned vineyards and exhibits briar, spice, and rich berry character.

A tasty wine to begin drinking in a year. Extremely concentrated and rich, with good depth of plum, herb and oak flavors, a supple, chewy texture and a sweet, fruity finish.

Lush, complex and concentrated, with lots of appealing wild berry, blackberry, earth, sage and spicy flavors, finishing with a firm wall of tannins. Best from 2000 through 2005.

Year after year, Ted Seghesio releases some of the best Zinfandels on the market. The Sonoma Zin, which combines fruit from Home Ranch, River Road, Lone Oak, San Lorenzo and Cortina Vineyards balances the sweet briar fruit California Zin is known for, with sultry spices understones and fine tannins without ever being over the top. Balanced and food friendly.

My value pick (also the largest in availability) is the 2000 Zinfandel Sonoma Valley. Dark ruby-colored, with a briery, earthy nose displaying a hint of pepper, this medium-bodied Zin exhibits a superficial, up-front charm, but is compressed and angular in the finish. Drink it over the next several years.
