Century-old Seghesio hit its stride in the 1990s when it reinvented itself to focus on Zinfandel. Ted Seghesio now makes five Zinfandel bottlings each year that routinely impress. This is the winery's best value, a blend of grapes from six different estate-owned or estate-farmed vineyards.

This is like a gangly teenager, young and a bit inelegant but charming. Shows robust black cherry and spice aromas and blackberry jam and licorice flavors. The tannins firm up the finish. Drink now through 2012.

The finest value here is the 2004 Zinfandel Sonoma (a 60,000-case blend of 90% Zinfandel and 10% Petite Sirah). A classic Zin, it offers a dark ruby/purple color along with raspberry and cherry fruit intermixed with notes of pepper, herbs, and earth. Tangy acidity, medium body, and good varietal character make for a delicious wine that will undoubtedly be discounted to around $16. Drink it over the next 2-3 years.

Pushes ripeness to the edge of jammy, with boysenberry and blackberry fruit that's juicy and complex, with a touch of cedar and plum on the finish, along with ripe, integrated tannins. 5,000 cases were produced with a twist-off closure. Drink now through 2009.

This seductive and vigorous zinfandel offers smoky black cherry and blueberry aromas that lead to youthful wild berry, sage and cracked pepper flavors, with a lingering finish and zesty tannins. Drink now through 2012.

Sweet oak and dusty, rich tannins play nicely against full, briery dark fruits. The lush black berry and cherry fruit is a great addition to pizza night or alongside spicy, Mediterranean-style dishes. At 14.9% alcohol, this is what we like to call a "Stay Home Zin."

Winemaker's Notes:

Our family roots are firmly planted in Zinfandel as our Great-Grandfather, Edoardo Seghesio, first planted Zinfandel on our Alexander Valley Home Ranch in 1895. Today, we share his passion as we farm over 400 acres of estate Zinfandel in the worlds best growing regions for the grape --- Alexander and Dry Creek Valleys. This wine combines sites that have produced Zinfandel for over a century with newer sites that utilize proprietary clones and the most advanced viticultural practices.<br/>
