Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Alsace Aoc Clos Häuserer 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

Zind Humbrecht's 2007 Riesling Clos Häuserer shows all thelimestone/calcareous character this grape variety can acquire from a healthy, slow ripening vintage: lots of minerals, juicy acidity and good weight. Thelower than usual alcohol level makes it a fantastic food wine and its delicatefinish is more enhanced by its acidity and minerality than sheer power.

Too severe, it prevents the harmonious development of the vine, insufficient, the vine will overproduce unripen grapes. A this moment, the presence of Paul’s grandson Pierre-Paul Humbrecht, is of utmost importance to the vineyard, to prune correctly and at the right time. Given unfavourable climatic conditions, the harvest may suffer but when the seasons flow normally the right pruning will be rewarded by a juice of very high quality. hen the vine has had its budburst, the disbudding (selection of branches) and desuckering (supression of the growths resulting from sucker from the trunk), are made manually to avoid any harmful effect to the vine. During the bloom, trimming consists in shortening the end of the branches leaving just the right quantity of good quality leafs that the young vine needs. During ripening, the stripping to improve the exposure of the grapes to the sun and thinning out the grapes in excess must be done with precision in order to obtain a harvest of great quality. orking the ground consists of several heavy duty work. Hilling up the vine, ploughing down and plowing between the rows of vine are accomplished each year. Naturally, Pierre-Paul Humbrecht is using the latest agricultural technologies to ease the task while remaining in harmony with nature, thus our advance towards biological agriculture or rather the search of our origins towards the Earth... An "Indice 4", this wine is actually considered "sweet" by Olivier. Fair enough...but it was so lovely, I had to include it in this list. Everything Gewurz should be - rosewater and lychee on the palate with a hint of unctuousness that never turns cloying.

There's good vibrancy to the acidity in this dry, tangy version, with lots of grapefruit and citrus peel up front. Finishes with the floral and white pepper notes typical of the variety. Drink now through 2012.

This dry white shows precise balance, and despite being medium- to full-bodied, seems elegant overall. Tangy acidity enlivens the apple sauce, lychee and clementine flavors, and there's lots of smoke and white pepper on the finish. Delicious. Drink now through 2025.

(14.6% alcohol, 29 g/l r.s. and 3.4 acidity; from young vines in Clos Windsbuhl) Pure, subtle fruit salad aromas lifted by stone. Very sweet and ripe, with good life in the mouth considering its low acidity (this went through ML). A fat style with modest nuance.

This dry, tangy version offers a lot of the grape's signature rose petal and cream flavors, but is also infused with hints of curry spices and plenty of red grape fruit and candies pouring peel. Bright acidity crackles through to the lingering, smoky finish. Drink now through 2019.

Pale medium-gold color. Expressive aromas of smoked meat, rose oil and cinnamon. Plump and spicy, with good ripe acidity and a chewy saline nuance. This is tactile and nicely concentrated, not to mention persistent, for a basic bottling.

Lovely varietal character from highly acclaimed biodynamic winery Zind-Humbrecht. Perfumed with honeysuckle, baking spice and stone fruits, with an exotic palate of lychee, almond, pear, peach and apple pie. Long, beautiful finish.
