Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Alsace Grand Cru Aoc Rangen de Thann Clos St. Urbain 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

"Green-tinged yellow. Smoky, flinty nose hints at peaty Islay scotch. Very sweet and concentrated, with harmonious acidity leavening the exotic character of the fresh and dried yellow fruit flavors flavors. This is actually quite primary. Long and bracing on the back end, finishing with a note of smoked meat. I would not be at all surprised if this wine lost some of its baby fat and went through a sullen stage in the bottle. For all its density, this is wonderfully bright on the aftertaste...93+" IWC 12/12

The annual cycle of work, parallel with cycle of nature, consists of a number of interventions, comprising biological treatments against the diseases and others aiming at improving the quality. mong the latter, the pruning is particularly decisive. Too severe, it prevents the harmonious development of the vine, insufficient, the vine will overproduce unripen grapes. A this moment, the presence of Paul’s grandson Pierre-Paul Humbrecht, is of utmost importance to the vineyard, to prune correctly and at the right time. Given unfavourable climatic conditions, the harvest may suffer but when the seasons flow normally the right pruning will be rewarded by a juice of very high quality. hen the vine has had its budburst, the disbudding (selection of branches) and desuckering (supression of the growths resulting from sucker from the trunk), are made manually to avoid any harmful effect to the vine. During the bloom, trimming consists in shortening the end of the branches leaving just the right quantity of good quality leafs that the young vine needs. During ripening, the stripping to improve the exposure of the grapes to the sun and thinning out the grapes in excess must be done with precision in order to obtain a harvest of great quality. orking the ground consists of several heavy duty work. Hilling up the vine, ploughing down and plowing between the rows of vine are accomplished each year. Naturally, Pierre-Paul Humbrecht is using the latest agricultural technologies to ease the task while remaining in harmony with nature, thus our advance towards biological agriculture or rather the search of our origins towards the Earth... This wine was a surprise from every angle. With its beautiful amber color and a floral bouquet, it satisfied my expectations. It had a slight effervescence, and a rich and complex flavor. It was well worth the price ($74 US), and I used it to celebrate my college graduation.

A rich style, this offers vanilla, butterscotch, dried orange peel and apricot aromas and flavors. Balanced, yet on the sweet side, so choose a food pairing accordingly. Has fine concentration and cut. Drink now through 2014.

Pale yellow-gold. Aromatic, muscat-like nose melds honeydew, chlorophyll, mint and flowers. Supple, clean and easygoing, with lovely inner-mouth perfume to the stone fruit flavors. This is a bit higher in residual sugar and acidity than the 2004. In a distinctly round style, finishing with lush flavors of peach and spices.

Highly aromatic, flinty nose of smoke, brown butter and sweet corn. Smoky, flinty flavors are deep, generous and mouthfilling. Powerful and quite dry, but has the sheer flavor and extract to buffer its 15+% alcohol. Stephen Tanzer.
