Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Blanc Blend Alsace Aoc Pinot d'Alsace 2006

Member Review by ChipDWood:

Imagine, if you will, a little tiny vine of Pinot Grigio, left alone in a strange land. Until one day, the Riesling family came along, and felt bad for the poor little Pinot Grigio vine. So they picked him up, wrapped their arms around him, and they all now live happily ever after in the Alsatian soils of Zind Humbrecht. Least... that's what I got out of it. Unique & clear flavors including lemon, bananas, pear, touches of butterscotch on the nose (especially when it began opening up). The Pinot D'Alsace had a pleasant weight to it, and balance as well. It handled cayenne pepper and other heat nicely, perhaps without the cutting acidity and cleanliness of some of its more established (and more "mineral-istic") Rieslings in the Zind family- but nice enough as to add to a spicy meal rather than detract. It was creamy on the mid palate, as well as on its way out with a solid, if not over-powering or all-too-profound of a finish. We enjoyed it, give it 4 glasses here, and 89 points elsewhere, should such numbers matter, and would recommend the experience. We're glad this little vine found such a great family to take him in, and make him a home ;).

The annual cycle of work, parallel with cycle of nature, consists of a number of interventions, comprising biological treatments against the diseases and others aiming at improving the quality. mong the latter, the pruning is particularly decisive. Too severe, it prevents the harmonious development of the vine, insufficient, the vine will overproduce unripen grapes. A this moment, the presence of Paul’s grandson Pierre-Paul Humbrecht, is of utmost importance to the vineyard, to prune correctly and at the right time. Given unfavourable climatic conditions, the harvest may suffer but when the seasons flow normally the right pruning will be rewarded by a juice of very high quality. hen the vine has had its budburst, the disbudding (selection of branches) and desuckering (supression of the growths resulting from sucker from the trunk), are made manually to avoid any harmful effect to the vine. During the bloom, trimming consists in shortening the end of the branches leaving just the right quantity of good quality leafs that the young vine needs. During ripening, the stripping to improve the exposure of the grapes to the sun and thinning out the grapes in excess must be done with precision in order to obtain a harvest of great quality. orking the ground consists of several heavy duty work. Hilling up the vine, ploughing down and plowing between the rows of vine are accomplished each year. Naturally, Pierre-Paul Humbrecht is using the latest agricultural technologies to ease the task while remaining in harmony with nature, thus our advance towards biological agriculture or rather the search of our origins towards the Earth... Flinty, light effervescence, light sweetness.

The smell of the sea winds through this full-bodied Pinot Blanc. Pretty peach, apricot, clementine and honeysuckle notes flesh it out, while zesty acidity provides a firm framework. Delicious on its own, but would pair well with seafood. Drink now through 2014.

Dried apple and peach notes accent a hint of lanolin and toast. The acidity stands out a bit now, so give this time or try with food. Ends with a lingering floral note. Drink now through 2012.

Firm acidity backs subtle notes of white peach, lemon zest, brine and smoke in this delicate, well-meshed white, with a lacy texture. An excellent summer sipper. Drink now through 2011.

Full medium gold. Exotic aromas and flavors of musky apricot, orange and medicinal herbs; one senses the wine's firm acidity on the nose. Then spicy, intense and surprisingly dry in the mouth, with a creamy texture leavened by some unabsorbed CO2. This chewy, substantial pinot blanc needs food.
