The annual cycle of work, parallel with cycle of nature, consists of a number of interventions, comprising biological treatments against the diseases and others aiming at improving the quality. mong the latter, the pruning is particularly decisive. Too severe, it prevents the harmonious development of the vine, insufficient, the vine will overproduce unripen grapes. A this moment, the presence of Paul’s grandson Pierre-Paul Humbrecht, is of utmost importance to the vineyard, to prune correctly and at the right time. Given unfavourable climatic conditions, the harvest may suffer but when the seasons flow normally the right pruning will be rewarded by a juice of very high quality. hen the vine has had its budburst, the disbudding (selection of branches) and desuckering (supression of the growths resulting from sucker from the trunk), are made manually to avoid any harmful effect to the vine. During the bloom, trimming consists in shortening the end of the branches leaving just the right quantity of good quality leafs that the young vine needs. During ripening, the stripping to improve the exposure of the grapes to the sun and thinning out the grapes in excess must be done with precision in order to obtain a harvest of great quality. orking the ground consists of several heavy duty work. Hilling up the vine, ploughing down and plowing between the rows of vine are accomplished each year. Naturally, Pierre-Paul Humbrecht is using the latest agricultural technologies to ease the task while remaining in harmony with nature, thus our advance towards biological agriculture or rather the search of our origins towards the Earth... Just off-dry and spicy, with grapefruit and lychee flavors added to the mix. Nicely balanced, picking up intensity on the white pepper-tinged finish. Drink now through 2010. 1,125 cases made. -BS Wine Spectator. A Gewurztraminer wine from Alsace in France. 2005 Domaine Zind Humbrecht Gewurztraminer Herrenweg Turckheim 750ml

A good value in the world of Zind-Humbrecht wines, this off-dry Gewuuml;rztraminer is super-concentrated, with a silky texture and flavors of lychees and cling peaches. A nice white cherry accent kicks in on the medium finish. Try with Thai fare.

A cheesy, yeasty "Mosel stink" on the nose of Richter's 2009 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett did not entirely blow off during the time I could devote to it, but the rest of the scents and flavors that emerged were virtuous: bright lemon; pungent spice; and suggestions of salt and stone, all in a buoyant and ultimately highly refreshing context. A return visit will hopefully find the nose cleared up here, and I suspect the wine has at least 12-15 year potential. The plot in question - for more about whose peculiarities, consult other reports I have written on Richter's wines - has an excellent track record in his hands.Zind-Humbrecht's 2007 Gewurztraminer Herrenweg de Turckheim smells of sweet pea, celery seed, litchi, peach preserves, bacon fat and browned butter. Polished and honeyed, creamy and sultry (but without its 15.5% alcohol generating objectionable heat) it finishes with remarkable reserves of primary juiciness and nips of cress and white pepper which - no doubt along with sheer extract - help keep its sweetness from becoming cloying.

(15.2% alcohol with 7.6 g/l r.s.) Pale yellow-gold color. Expressive aromas of smoked meat, spices and mirabelle then surprisingly dry in the mouth, with bracing flavors of minerals and ginger. Not yet round but this has a serious backbone.

Exotic and rich, this Gewuuml;rztraminer has a smoky, mineral edge to its rose, apricot and honey flavors. Itrsquo;s big, but never plodding, and resonates on the long finish. Drink now through 2010.

This juicy white delivers honeyed flavors of kumquat, star fruit, candied grapefruit, with exotic spice and smoke. The firm acidity finds precision balance with the silky, mouthcoating texture, and a pretty orange blossom note lingers on the finish. Drink now through 2020.
