Zind-Humbrecht Gewürztraminer Alsace Aoc Clos Windsbuhl 1991

External Review by Epic Cellars:

The Gewurztraminers are stunning in 1991. As in most vintages, the 1991 Gewurztraminer Clos Windsbuhl possesses the highest acidity. It is also the most unctuous, richest, and highest in extract. Because of the acidity, it is the least flattering to taste. It is a profound example of how great Gewurztraminer can be when made from exceptionally low yields by a prodigious winemaker. The nose of minerals, roses, and spices is followed by a massively endowed, rich, stunningly proportioned wine that should be at its best between 1995-2005.

The annual cycle of work, parallel with cycle of nature, consists of a number of interventions, comprising biological treatments against the diseases and others aiming at improving the quality. mong the latter, the pruning is particularly decisive. Too severe, it prevents the harmonious development of the vine, insufficient, the vine will overproduce unripen grapes. A this moment, the presence of Paul’s grandson Pierre-Paul Humbrecht, is of utmost importance to the vineyard, to prune correctly and at the right time. Given unfavourable climatic conditions, the harvest may suffer but when the seasons flow normally the right pruning will be rewarded by a juice of very high quality. hen the vine has had its budburst, the disbudding (selection of branches) and desuckering (supression of the growths resulting from sucker from the trunk), are made manually to avoid any harmful effect to the vine. During the bloom, trimming consists in shortening the end of the branches leaving just the right quantity of good quality leafs that the young vine needs. During ripening, the stripping to improve the exposure of the grapes to the sun and thinning out the grapes in excess must be done with precision in order to obtain a harvest of great quality. orking the ground consists of several heavy duty work. Hilling up the vine, ploughing down and plowing between the rows of vine are accomplished each year. Naturally, Pierre-Paul Humbrecht is using the latest agricultural technologies to ease the task while remaining in harmony with nature, thus our advance towards biological agriculture or rather the search of our origins towards the Earth... The Gewurztraminers are stunning in 1991. The 1991 Gewurztraminer Hengst displays evidence of botrytis. It also shares the unctuousness and richness of the other Zind-Humbrecht 1991 Gewurztraminers. It is spectacular, with full-bodied flavors, and a perfumed, intense aroma. It will keep easily for a decade.

The Gewurztraminers are stunning in 1991. The 1991 Gewurztraminer Goldert, made from 60-year old vines, offers an exquisite, super-fragrant nose of roses, buttered lychee nuts, and fruit. The flavors are exquisitely well-balanced, full-bodied, authoritatively flavored, and superbly balanced by crisp acidity. This big-styled Gewurztraminer should drink well for another 10-12 years
