Winemaker's Notes:

Each year Zind-Humbrecht produces some of Alsace’s most sumptuous and sought-after wines. The property is managed by Olivier Humbrecht, one of the world’s only winemakers to attain M.W. status and a passionate and intelligent advocate for the wines of Alsace and the benefits of Biodynamic farming. Under his guidance this legendary estate produces pure, powerful, racy bottlings that are astonishingly faithful to their individual vineyard sites.

The annual cycle of work, parallel with cycle of nature, consists of a number of interventions, comprising biological treatments against the diseases and others aiming at improving the quality. mong the latter, the pruning is particularly decisive. Too severe, it prevents the harmonious development of the vine, insufficient, the vine will overproduce unripen grapes. A this moment, the presence of Paul’s grandson Pierre-Paul Humbrecht, is of utmost importance to the vineyard, to prune correctly and at the right time. Given unfavourable climatic conditions, the harvest may suffer but when the seasons flow normally the right pruning will be rewarded by a juice of very high quality. hen the vine has had its budburst, the disbudding (selection of branches) and desuckering (supression of the growths resulting from sucker from the trunk), are made manually to avoid any harmful effect to the vine. During the bloom, trimming consists in shortening the end of the branches leaving just the right quantity of good quality leafs that the young vine needs. During ripening, the stripping to improve the exposure of the grapes to the sun and thinning out the grapes in excess must be done with precision in order to obtain a harvest of great quality. orking the ground consists of several heavy duty work. Hilling up the vine, ploughing down and plowing between the rows of vine are accomplished each year. Naturally, Pierre-Paul Humbrecht is using the latest agricultural technologies to ease the task while remaining in harmony with nature, thus our advance towards biological agriculture or rather the search of our origins towards the Earth... I was a little disappointed in this wine. On the nose, geraniums and exotic spices jump out of the glass. The palate is big and heavy with a bitter edge on the back that in my opinion comes from the alcohol. This wine finishes dry. I can see this wine being a good pair with rich, spicy Louisiana food.

Zind-Humbrecht’s generic 2009 Pinot Gris this year incorporates all of their fruit from the Herrenweg plus bits and pieces from other sites. In contrast to other recent installments, it finished entirely dry, having in the process accumulated 14% alcohol. Scents of smoked meat and meat pate mingled with fresh mirabelle migrate to a creamy-textured yet — for its grape and vintage — surprisingly brightly juicy palate. This finishes with a faint hint of heat that won’t matter when it is appropriately paired at table over the next couple of years.

A finely balanced, elegant white, with subtle flavors of white peach and yellow apple that show hints of star fruit, candied lemon zest and fresh earth. There's a vibrancy to this wine that extends through to the white pepper-accented finish. Drink now through 2020.
