Zind-Humbrecht Gewürztraminer Alsace Aoc 2009
Each year Zind-Humbrecht produces some of Alsace’s most sumptuous and sought-after wines. The property is managed by Olivier Humbrecht, one of the world’s only winemakers to attain M.W. status and a passionate and intelligent advocate for the wines of Alsace and the benefits of Biodynamic farming. Under his guidance this legendary estate produces pure, powerful, racy bottlings that are astonishingly faithful to their individual vineyard sites.
I was a little disappointed in this wine. On the nose, geraniums and exotic spices jump out of the glass. The palate is big and heavy with a bitter edge on the back that in my opinion comes from the alcohol. This wine finishes dry. I can see this wine being a good pair with rich, spicy Louisiana food.

A finely balanced, elegant white, with subtle flavors of white peach and yellow apple that show hints of star fruit, candied lemon zest and fresh earth. There's a vibrancy to this wine that extends through to the white pepper-accented finish. Drink now through 2020.
Zind-Humbrecht’s generic 2009 Pinot Gris this year incorporates all of their fruit from the Herrenweg plus bits and pieces from other sites. In contrast to other recent installments, it finished entirely dry, having in the process accumulated 14% alcohol. Scents of smoked meat and meat pate mingled with fresh mirabelle migrate to a creamy-textured yet — for its grape and vintage — surprisingly brightly juicy palate. This finishes with a faint hint of heat that won’t matter when it is appropriately paired at table over the next couple of years.
