Abacus is a popular California cult wine produced by ZD winery in Napa, California. The wine is the brainchild of winemaking brothers Robert and Brett Leuze. The idea formed when they were on a family retreat discussing wines, remarking at the nuances of well aged red wines, which often sacrifice fruit characteristics. They decided to attempt to create a wine that blends “...the elegance of an older Cabernet Sauvignon with the intensity of fruit found in a younger wine.” The result is the first ever “solera style,” multi-vintage Cabernet, which adds younger wines to existing older ones, leaving them all in the barrel to age together until bottling. Each bottle has a medallion which depicts an abacus that identifies the first and last vintages in the bottle. The base price for a new bottle of Abacus starts at $500, fetching much more at auction.
