Zaca Mesa Winery Syrah Santa Ynez Valley 2014

Member Review by EMark:

Nice Syrahy dark black plum color in the glass. Something of a viney, or fungal nose.Quite mouth-filling. Initial reaction is oaky with not fruit. As the wine move over the palate, there is more detection of tannin with a tad bitterness. Way in the back is some berry/plum hints and then more oak. US$17.99 at Total Wine.

The Wine: In 1978, we pioneered Syrah in Santa Barbara County and became recognized as a world-renowned producer of the varietal. We maintain this commitment through vineyard experimentation, including new high-density plantings with multiple Syrah clones. Our diversity of both vine age and clonal material delivers a Syrah with exceptional complexity, balance, and depth. Our 2012 Syrah displays layers of ripe wild-berry, cola, pepper and our signature sage spice. The silky finish lingers from the perfectly ripe tannins with a touch of smoky oak from barrel aging. Winemaking: After hand harvesting, the Syrah along with a few Viognier and Grenache grapes were placed into small open-top bins to co-ferment. During fermentation, grape skins were punched down twice a day resulting in a wine of intense color, rich flavors and fine tannins. The wine was then placed into French oak barrels for 16 months to age. Growing Season and Harvest: 2012 was a fantastic year for growing grapes in the Santa Ynez Valley. We had average rainfall in the winter months and a mild spring allowing for perfect bloom and set conditions. Summer was a touch cooler than average, permitting great flavor development at lower sugar levels. The harvest began right on schedule in early September and with stunning growing conditions continued until the first week of November. Alc: 14.1% pH: 3.63 ** Only 10 in Stock **

The Wine: Zaca Mesa Winery was the first to plant Syrah in Santa Barbara County in 1978. Today we farm over 100 acres of Syrah on our estate comprising 9 different clones. The diversity of vine age and clones provides our Syrah’s with complexity and depth. Even with 30 years of experience with Syrah on our land, we continue to learn and improve our practices to make better wine. Our 2010 Syrah displays bright blackberry, wild-berry, flowers, mocha, pepper and our signature sage spice. The silky finish lingers from the ripe tannins with a touch of smoky oak. A traditional pairing for this wine is a rack of lamb marinated in rosemary and garlic. Winery History: We hand craft our wines with integrity using traditional methods from grapes sustainably grown in our Santa Barbara County vineyard. Since 1973, we have farmed and nurtured our vineyard to produce wines that are true to the unique spirit of our land. We began growing Rhone varieties in 1978 when we were the first to plant Syrah in Santa Barbara County. Over the years, we have learned that wines indigenous to the Rhone Valley of France are ideally suited to our estate. Our Estate: Our vineyard soils are Chamise Loam which are well-drained soils that developed over gravelly beds of silt and clay, and sandy water-deposited materials. These soils are on dissected high terraces (or mesas) with elevations of 1500 feet above sea level. This high elevation provides cooler nights, which translates into wines retaining their natural acidity. Since 1997, the winery has replanted more than half of its original vines with a high-density planting of new rootstock and clone combinations. Growing Season: 2010 was an exceptionally cool and long growing season for the Santa Ynez Valley. Summer did not give us the usual heat we expect, leading to fruit that developed at a very slow and steady pace. Picking began in late-September, about a month behind normal, while finishing in mid-November. The mild year provided flavor development without excess sugar for wines of great quality and beautiful balance. Winemaking: After hand harvesting, the Syrah and Viognier grapes were placed into small opentop bins to co-ferment. During fermentation, grape skins were punched down twice a day resulting in a wine of intense color, rich flavors and fine tannins. The wine was then placed into French oak barrels for 16 months to age. Composition: 94% Syrah 6% Viognier Cooperage: 16 months in French oak; 19% new Alcohol: 13.6% pH: 3.57 TA: 0.603 g/100ml

Dark purple. Aromas and flavors of cassis, black olive and licorice. Fleshy, seamless and subtly sweet. Rich and broad but could a bit more shape and lift. Finishes smooth, with gentle tannins. Rich and smoky, intense and vibrant, with complex roasted meat, spice and dried berry flavors, ending with firm, drying tannins. Best from 2012 through 2020. 6,448 cases made. -JL The 2008 Syrah emerges from the glass with blackberry jam, spices and chocolate. This is a fairly big, plump style of Syrah with limited finesse and complexity. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2014. A sweetly soft 100% Syrah, made for drinking now. It's jammy and forward in raspberries, cherries and mocha, with a dusting of pepper and cinnamon. Firm tannins provide a good grip in the mouth. - S.H. ** SOLD OUT **
