Zaca Mesa Syrah 2013

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

A bit tight at first but, with some air, this opens very nicely, revealing boysenberry fruit with hints of peach, leather, dried herbs, licorice and light cracked pepper. Broad on entry with a touch of sweetness from the alcohol but well structured. The tannins help ground the mid-palate, which offers nice fruit but a very fine earthy underlay as well. The backend is rich and layered with cocoa and licorice accents before yielding to the ripe berry fruit and light dusting of pepper on the moderately long finish. This has a nice firmness yet remains rather transparent and holds its alcohol remarkably well. 92pts

Spicy fruit and oak tones intermingle. On the nose with same old coffee, violets, green peppercorn and herbaceous tones all framing the very fresh and high toned plum and wild berry fruit. There is sweet/savory tension here and the nuances continue to reveal themselves with notes of cedar, mint, earth, cola and roast meat tones. Very pretty and with good intensity to the rich and juicy core of bright, piercing fruit. The acid is fairly high but very well integrated in the fleshy fruit. Great mouthfeel. Plenty of plummy fruit with a touch of drying tannin that would benefit from a year or so in the cellar and lovely orange rind and incipient black olive background notes on the palate that really push the slightly earthy, astringent red berry fruit out with it’s contrast. Fresh and pure this is wonderful syrah 92pts

Somewhat murky prune color. On the palate, an immediate hit of ripe stone fruits—plum, peach. Sprightly sensation on the tongue—like an astringency or effervescence. Also, a tartness that seems to hit the front of the tongue. Normally, I seem to get that at the back. Some minerally sensations at the back of the palate. A very lengthy, cherry finish. US$18.79 at Costco in 2010.

My husband and I both found this wine to be absolutely delightful. I would describe it as round, jammy and a little spicy with a wonderful lingering finish. We will add this syrah into our regular rotation of red wines.

Showed its age in a good way. Blackberry, leather, cured meats, mocha and herbs. Solid tannins and smoky spice, oak and cedar. Midnight yummy.

Showing a deep ruby-red at its core, the color fades slightly to a thin, dark crimson rim. The nose explodes from the glass with boldly perfumed aromas of cassis and dark berries with complementary notes sage and vanilla spice. The palate is plush ... Chris Caughman. This is Zaca Mesa's basic Syrah, and it's quite a good wine. Dry and rich in tannins, it's showing complex flavors of black currants, black pepper, violets and cedar, with a meaty, leathery edge. N

Displays rich blackberry, cassis and sage spice aromas and flavors. The finish lingers from the ripe tannins and smoky oak. This full-bodied wine should be enjoyed over the next ten years. A traditional pairing for this wine is a leg of lamb marinated in rosemary and garlic. However, a peppercorn steak or mushroom risotto would work incredibly well.
