Zaca Mesa 2014

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

53% Grenache, 39% Mourvedre, 8% Syrah A bit of raw oak marks this with a smoky and slightly balsamic note over a bit of Mourvedre beef jerky and dried beef, lots of violet, lots of wild blackberry and a hint of plum fruit. Bright yet powerful in the mouth with mouthwatering acidity and a nice base of supply yet dry tannins that lend clarity to the peach, raspberry, and wild cherry fruit on the mid palate. A fine edge of strawberry lingers on the moderately long finish which shows off a little finesse and elegance. 89pts

I stock up on this great value at each vintage release, but the '07 is the best in my experience. A great rhone blend. Lacks in complexity department, but the price and overall quality makes up for it.

I picked this up after reading the wine list in a good quality local restaurant when by myself with nothing to read, and because I like the sound of this blend, like a Côtes du Rhône. 59% Grenache, 23% Mourvédre, 15% Syrah, and 3% Cinsaut. It seemed sugary at first with curry, but it paired better with the mild stir-fry the next night.

Fresh and lively, this is medium-bodied, with snappy wild berry and raspberry flavors shaded by spicy, peppery notes. Ends with supple, elegant, easy-drinking tannins. Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah. Drink now through 2012. 8,031 cases made. -JL As for the red wines, these acquitted themselves very well in my tastings, The 2006 Z Cuvee (a blend of 59% Grenache, 23% Mourvedre, 15% Syrah, and the rest Cinsault) is a deep ruby-colored beauty exhibiting plenty of raspberry and jammy strawberry notes, with some blacker fruits, pepper, and roasted herbs also making an appearance. The wine is round, generous, spicy, and a very good California interpretation of a serious Cotes du Rhone from France. Drink it over the next 1-3 years. A Châteauneuf-style blend, based on Grenache, that's clean, fresh and savory. It shows cherry, currant, anise and herb flavors that are wrapped into a soft texture. Oak adds a pleasant, subtle note of smoke. - S.H. &nb...
