What to Expect

The great sweet wines of Bordeaux, Sauternes, are among the most decadent, complex and simply enjoyable wines. Based on a blend of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc that has been infected with the "noble rot", Botrytis Cinerea, Sauternes are rich, honied wines bursting with notes of vanilla, coconut, dried apricots and subtle spice tones. They are usually very sweet and rich with a soft quality to them that makes them appealing in their youth yet they can age and improve for decades. The neighboring village of Barsac frequently makes wines comparable to those of Sauternes.

Winemakers Notes

Wonderful aromas of pineapple apple and lemon with loads of botrytis. Full-bodied but very refined superfresh and racy. Goes on and on. Fabulous. Incredible purity and brightness. Like a perfectly cut diamond. Pierre Lurton the manager of Yquem as well as Cheval-Blanc really wanted to mark his arrival at the legendary estate so he went to draconian lengths to deliver something superb in 2004.`

Light gold with a tight but promising nose of roasted hazelnuts intermixed with creme brulee, vanilla beans, honey, orange marmalade, and peaches...There is admirable acidity, weight, texture, and purity in this impeccably made Yquem.

Rating: 5/5 - As reviewed by Decanter Stands out at the top of the classification, as it does for being the first Primeur sample of Yquem ever to be shown. This wine is simply 'hors classe'. The final blend has 13.5% alcohol and 129 grams per litre of residual sugar, with marked acidity of 4.8g/litre. It is 65% Sémillon to 35% Sauvignon instead of the traditional 80%/20%. The wine is explosively perfumed and unctuous. On the palate it is very long with superb complex textures and opulent richness, power and beauty. The sample is only indicative as the assemblage is not complete. (19.5 points)
