What to Expect

The great sweet wines of Bordeaux, Sauternes, are among the most decadent, complex and simply enjoyable wines. Based on a blend of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc that has been infected with the "noble rot", Botrytis Cinerea, Sauternes are rich, honied wines bursting with notes of vanilla, coconut, dried apricots and subtle spice tones. They are usually very sweet and rich with a soft quality to them that makes them appealing in their youth yet they can age and improve for decades. The neighboring village of Barsac frequently makes wines comparable to those of Sauternes.

Winemakers Notes

Chateau d'Yquem is one of the most highly-regarded dessert wines in the world. In the famous 1855 classification of Bordeaux, Château d’Yquem was the only domaine to be accorded the rank of Premier Cru Supérieur. Produced from painstakingly handpicked grapes and severe selection in the winery, only 1 glass of wine per vine is produced at d’Yquem.

Blend: 80% Sémillon, 20% Sauvignon Blanc

Color: Medium gold

Aroma: Honeyed, oaky, flowery, tropical fruit bouquet, magnificent and unique

Palate: Rich, opulent, concentrated and full-bodied

The 2001 is the best Yquem in living memory. In the glass the wine is a striking golden colour with tints of green. After some period of decanting the nose comes forward in spades pouring forth honey and almonds, with cream and pineapples in support.

The greatest young Yquem I have ever tasted from bottle. Yellow, with a golden hue and an almost green tint. Intense aromas of botrytis, spices and blanched almonds follow through to honey, maple syrup, dried apricot and pineapple. Full-bodied, sweet... Wine Spectator. A Sauternes Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 2001 Yquem, Chateau d' 375ml

Jancis
Robinson

Rating: 19/20 - As reviewed by Jancis Robinson Medium depth of slightly greenish gold and obvious density so that it was not by any means translucent. Quite exceptionally rich, heady and unctuous on the nose. Extremely round and complete with just a hint of bitter orange/Oxford marmalade that gives it spine - though a very slight edge of bitterness at this early stage. A deeply reverberating wine with all the layers of super-ripe pears one would expect in a heavy botrytis year and the most magnificent satin texture. But this sample, I swear, even had a hint a roquefort in its undoubted depths. This is an incredibly long wine that caresses the read more...

Nose: flowery, very honeyed, pears, light raisin. Greenish straw color. Medium thickness. Honey, but not at all raisiny. Flowers, incredibly rich and luscious. Perfect acidity. Mouth-coating! Lavender? Apricot. Huge, but subtle. Lt banana. I'm not worthy. $300/375ml
