Yellow Tail Reserve Shiraz 2012

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Intensely aromatic on the nose with a huge rush of truffle early on that is followed by toasty oak, cracked black pepper, aromas of dates and figs and some sweet vanilla. Low acid and languid in the mouth, this is smooth and glossy, with a fair amount of weight but not that much detail to the core of plump dried fruit, truffle, vanilla and black plum flavors. The finish shows a fair amount of wood tannin and some heat. A little unbalanced but not entirely unpleasant. 78pts

Earthy and a bit funky/reductive on the nose though the tight nose does show a minty aspect as well as a bit of earthy minerality. Stiff and extracted in the mouth with a lot of fruit that is skewed toward the sweeter end of the spectrum. This is fairly well structured yet is a bit obviously extracted with good length to the cocoa-tinged finish. A fairly big wine that trades power for elegance. 87pts

Fairly solid, standard, and reliable australian shiraz. Seemed sweeter/more fruity than I remember from yellow tail. Good for the price, but don't expect to be totally blown away.

I have to agree with Echelar in that the old Yellow Tail wines had were packed with more flavor that what has recently come out. Overall though for the price you can't go wrong.

Had to grow on me, but once it did, it was great! Love the finish on this one.

I have tried about 20 red wines and this one is a great one that is under $10 a bottle. It has a full but smooth taste, without that hard dry after taste. Not to fruity, but sweeter than the regular Yellow Tail Shiraz. A great wine for the price!!!!

Vibrant, ripe and generous - a drop that is big on flavor and deep in color with an intense aroma. It has delicious concentrated cherry and blackberry flavors with hints of classic cracked pepper spice. These flavors are complimented by vanilla softness and well structured tannins. - Winery

Light, soft and pleasant for its sweetish berry flavors, which pick up a hint of sweet pepper on the finish

Wine Tasting NotesAn intensely concentrated wine, the [yellow tail] Shiraz initially reveals aromas of ripe cherries, blackberries, chocolate and moccha. Delving deeper into this complex wine, cracked pepper and spice fragrance are apparent with sweet French oak aromas always present. The vanilla softness on the nose takes you into a full palate crammed with ripe fruits reminiscent of a basket of sweet summer berries. Seamless and well structured tannins complete this full bodied red wine.
