Citrus and honeydew flavors are further complexed by gentle French oak aging. The palate is soft yet fresh with balanced acidity and a soft creamy finish.

Soft, bordering on sweet, silky and spicy, with more oak than fruit, but finishing with a nice touch of peach. Drink now.

This Pinot Grigio is ripe and round without being overly heavy, marrying muskmelon and nectarine flavors to a cool, refreshing finish.

Bright and zippy, with lemon and lime notes, plus hints of nectarine at the edge. Drink now.

Soft, smooth and appealing for its slightly sweet pineapple, citrus and molasses flavors, lingering on the polished finish. Drink now.

The Yellow Tail cuvees I tasted are surprisingly good for wines made in such enormous quantities. A new Reserve line (priced at $12) is just being released. The 2002 Chardonnay The Reserve is marginally better than the standard cuvee. Made in a similar style, it is a soft, fleshy, fruity (tropical), medium-bodied effort revealing a hint of residual sugar. It is no surprise to me that consumers are intelligent, and should never be under-estimated. Since there are no remaining stocks of the 2001s, I did not have an opportunity to see how they age, but these 2002s all have merit. In some wine circles it is fashionable to criticize wines of this genre, but, if the truth be known, these are surprisingly well-made offerings. All of these wines are intelligently packaged with designer labels and synthetic corks.

Winemaker's Notes:

The [yellow tail] Chardonnay is a blend of selected parcels of fruit from some of Australia's best Chardonnay growing areas. Using fruit from the Hunter Valley, Cowra and Riverina we have created a wine with incredible freshness and character. This wine exhibits citrus and honeydew flavors further complexed by creamy French oak aromas. The palate is soft yet fresh with balanced acidity and a soft creamy finish. This wine will develop well over the next few years.
