Yangarra Estate Select Dundee Hills Shiraz Syrah 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

"Our vineyard is in the coolest parts of mclaren vale, giving our low yields times to slowly accumulate concentrated powerful flavours of blackberry and plums, with hints of spice. The open fermenters and wild yeast allow maximum extraction and complexity with soft silky tannins "       PETER FRASER, Winemaker • 93 Points/Editors Choice, Wine Enthusiast-June 2007 • Double Gold, Florida State Fair International Wine Competition-February 2007 • Double Gold, Fingerlakes Int'l Wine Competition-April 2007 • Exceptional, Dan Berger's Vintage Experiences-August 2007 Region:100% McLaren Vale, 100% Estate Grown Varietal Composition:100% Shiraz Analysis:15.0% alcohol, pH 3.62, TA 0.65 g/100ml Maturation:18 months; 33% new, 33% one year old, 33% two years old; all 100% French oak barriques Production: 5,778 cases

Yangarra is an aboriginal word meaning "from the earth." All of our wines are grown on our single-vineyard Estate in the Blewitt Springs sub region of McLaren Vale, South Australia, with 250 acres of vines in 35 individual blocks spread amongst 420 acres of creeks, native vegetation and nature corridors. The Estate sits at the north-eastern extreme of the Willunga Basin at the foot of the South Mount Lofty Ranges. We are utterly devoted to minimal intervention in viticulture and winemaking. Our desire is to produce wines that are the most brilliant possible reflection of the Estate's unique terroir and provide a profound sense of place. The key to Yangarra's unique flavours is a large, smooth dune of Ngankipari Sand, a precisely-delineated Aeolian, or wind-blown geological formation that was laid down about a million years ago (which is very young in Australia's ancient geology). This sand is an extremely weathered remnant of mountain ranges that stood here 1.6 billion years ago, weathered away, and then rose again 500 million years ago. After a second weathering, the current ranges began to rise about 100 million years ago. Read less

Great fruit in this wine, absolutely mind blowing at that price ($11-15). A delicious wine, simply.

Yangarra Single Estate Shiraz - 2005 92 POINTS - Robert Parker The 2005 Shiraz is purple-colored with an expressive perfume of cedar, smoke, game, blueberry, and blackberry. Full-bodied with a broad palate and mouth-coating fruit, it has outstanding depth, tons of black fruit flavor, and a long pure finish. Drink it over the next 6-8 years. Yangarra Estate Vineyards, whose first vintage was in 2000, was purchased by Jess Jackson in 2001. It is located in the Foothills/Blewitt Springs region of McLaren Vale. Grenache and Shiraz are the two principal varieties planted on the estate. The winery uses all wild ferments, 100% French oak, predominantly new.
