Yalumba was founded in 1849 by Samuel Smith, British migrant and English brewer, who had brought his family to Angaston seeking a new life. After purchasing a 30-acre parcel of land just beyond the southern-eastern boundary of Angaston, Smith and his son began planting the first vines by moonlight. Samuel named his patch "Yalumba" – aboriginal for "all the land around". Six generations and more than 150 years later Yalumba, Australia's oldest family owned winery, has grown in size and stature, embodying all that has made the Australian wine success story the envy of winemakers the world over. Yalumba wines have a style all of their own and each have been influenced by a diverse range of elements. Elements Yalumba likes to call 'the controllables', such as the Yalumba Vine Nursery and on-site cooperage – as well as other factors that cannot be emulated by any other winery. Yalumba’s history and tradition combined with a reputation for innovation. An enchanting wine with aromas of lemon and honeysuckle with hints of spice. The palate is rich, luscious and silky with juicy tropical fruit, citrus and lychee.

Aromas are of grass and tropical yellow fruit. Fresh pineapple and pear are the dominant flavors on the palate, and persist on through the finish. Medium-bodied, with nice weight; very good overall, particularly at this price.

Bright and tangy, with floral and green berry flavors that linger on the citrusy finish. Drink now.

Sunny, summery, pretty: While this wine is almost always a good value, it's particularly good this vintage. Honeysuckle, melon, pear and other stone fruit flavors are delivered in a medium-sized package; the wine is pretty complex, too, especially considering its price point. A house pour for this summer if ever there was one.

The exotic apricot, peach, and litchi nut-scented and flavored 2005 Viognier possesses enough zesty acidity to provide balance and freshness to its flamboyant style.

Yalumba consistently demonstrates a deft touch for producing high quality, elegantly-styled Viognier and their stunning 2004 is filled with flavor, finesse, and minerality. With a wonderful texture as well as abundant quantities of honeysuckle, litchi nut, tropical fruit, and apricot/peach notes, it should be enjoyed over the next 1-2 years. This is an excellent value.
