Yalumba Y Series Shiraz 2016

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

A bit tight on the nose but with impressive clarity to the blackberry, black currant fruit that is underlain with nuanced vanilla, tobacco, caramel, and black pepper aromas. A bit chewy on entry, and showing a bit of reticence though ari brings out spicy, zesty black currant and boysenberry flavors on the palate that are framed with hints of mint, meat, black spice and vaguely stemmy, medicinal accents. The tannins have just a hint of youthful edginess and the acids are nicely integrated lending this a slightly rustic yet fresh appeal in the mouth. The finish turns slightly floral at first, then darker with rich, fresh fruit character of crushed berries and spiced plums barely dusted with black pepper spice and through it all this retains transparency and freshness in the mouth. Eminently drinkable. 88pts

After purchasing a 30-acre parcel of land just beyond the southern-eastern boundary of Angaston, Smith and his son began planting the first vines by moonlight. Samuel named his patch "Yalumba" – aboriginal for "all the land around". Six generations and more than 150 years later Yalumba, Australia's oldest family owned winery, has grown in size and stature, embodying all that has made the Australian wine success story the envy of winemakers the world over. Yalumba wines have a style all of their own and each have been influenced by a diverse range of elements. Elements Yalumba likes to call 'the controllables', such as the Yalumba Vine Nursery and on-site cooperage – as well as other factors that cannot be emulated by any other winery. Yalumba’s history and tradition combined with a reputation for innovation. This 2011 Syrah from South Australia is good. Deep crimson color with a mid-rim variation. Fruit notes of plum and black cherries with a hint of toasted oak. It has a long finish on the palette with low acidity. A good everyday table red wine. Best served chilled to 60 degrees, and served with a meaty supreme style thin crust pizza.

Visually this wine is a deep purple with thin legs on the glass. The nose starts as a deep peppery berry scent finishing with a sharp but light tingle. The taste is quite good, very mildly dry with flavoring of black currant, pepper, and an extremely mild butter flavor that sits on the tip of the tongue.

Dark ruby. Spicy, floral bouquet of redcurrant, raspberry and cherry jam. Vibrant and juicy, with a refreshing red berry quality and intriguing acid lift. Spicy, focused and mineral-driven on the finish, with subtle floral notes arriving on the very back.

This is velvety, with a spicy tone from the Viognier adding interest to the bright red berry and red plum flavors, lingering on the vivid finish. Drink now through 2012.

Weingut: YalumbaLand: AustralienAnbauregion: Eden ValleyRebsorte: Shiraz, ViognierInhalt: 0,75 lAlkoholgehalt: 13,5 Vol.%Säuregehalt: 6,3 g/lRestsüße: trockenFassreife: in Barriques gereift (9 Monate)Empfohlene Serviertemperatur: 16 °CLagerfähigkeit: 3-5 Jahre ab Jahrgang Rotwein > Australien > Eden Valley

The 2007 Shiraz-Viognier (6%) continues the success of this cuvandeacute;e. Dark ruby-colored, it has an enticing perfume of violets, spice box, and blueberry. This leads to a medium-bodied wine with a smooth-texture, sweet fruit, good depth and concentration, and a fruit-filled finish. Drink this crowd-pleasing effort over the next three years.

The outstanding 2004 Shiraz/Viognier (95% and 5% respectively) offers an exotic, flamboyant nose of blackberries and flowers along with wonderful intensity, richness, fruit, and glycerin. Enjoy it over the next 3-4 years.
