Yalumba Viognier Eden Valley the Virgilius 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

Yalumba 'The Virgilius' Eden Valley Viognier is one of Yalumba's most distinguished white wines and the premium Viognier offering. With more than 26 years of experience with this variety, Yalumba today is one of the most influential producers of Viognier in the world. Late 2005 saw the beginning of the planting of the first Viognier clonal selections that had been propagating in the Yalumba Vine Nursery in the Barossa. Eight different clones were planted on the south eastern park of the Yalumba Eden Valley vineyard - the "Virgilius Vineyard" on Flaxmann Valley Road. The 2007 season created a wine with both finesse and opulence, with layers of complexity and lusciousness. On the nose the aroma is intense with white peaches, apricots and ginger. The palate is lifted with ginger spice, layered mineral texture and complex apricots along with white stone fruit flavours. The trademark Viognier lusciousness of the palate is clearly evident in this wine which is unctuous and complex while at the same time showing restraint that should ensure good cellaring for at least 3-4 years.

Samuel named his patch "Yalumba" – aboriginal for "all the land around". Six generations and more than 150 years later Yalumba, Australia's oldest family owned winery, has grown in size and stature, embodying all that has made the Australian wine success story the envy of winemakers the world over. Yalumba wines have a style all of their own and each have been influenced by a diverse range of elements. Elements Yalumba likes to call 'the controllables', such as the Yalumba Vine Nursery and on-site cooperage – as well as other factors that cannot be emulated by any other winery. Yalumba’s history and tradition combined with a reputation for innovation. Funky nose. Missing the trademark florals and herbs I was expecting from Viognier. The flavor on the other hand, is good. This is what I would expect. - WS Grand Tour 2011
