Winemaker's Notes:

In an era when consolidation seems an unstoppable force and Australian wine is becoming ever more corporate, Yalumba’s steadfast independence as Australia’s oldest family-owned winery is to be applauded. Robert Hill Smith is the fifth generation in charge since the winery’s foundation in 1849, and he manages a company that boasts independence not just of ownership, but also in many aspects of production. For example, Yalumba has its own nursery and cooperage, so all the vines and barrels used are guaranteed to be of top quality. The grapes for this Merlot are sourced from the Barossa, Adelaide Hills and Wrattonbully regions. The grapes were fermented in static potter and rotary fermenters. Warm temperatures at the onset of fermentation and also three to five days’ post-ferment maceration has helped build a good structure. Very expressive nose with redcurrants, violets and Turkish delight. Round, succulent, balanced palate with a hints of dark chocolate on the finish.
