Yalumba was founded in 1849 by Samuel Smith, British migrant and English brewer, who had brought his family to Angaston seeking a new life. After purchasing a 30-acre parcel of land just beyond the southern-eastern boundary of Angaston, Smith and his son began planting the first vines by moonlight. Samuel named his patch "Yalumba" – aboriginal for "all the land around". Six generations and more than 150 years later Yalumba, Australia's oldest family owned winery, has grown in size and stature, embodying all that has made the Australian wine success story the envy of winemakers the world over. Yalumba wines have a style all of their own and each have been influenced by a diverse range of elements. Elements Yalumba likes to call 'the controllables', such as the Yalumba Vine Nursery and on-site cooperage – as well as other factors that cannot be emulated by any other winery. Yalumba’s history and tradition combined with a reputation for innovation. Typically not a fan of Chardonnay or more to the point over-oaked Chardonnay most common to California wine-making I found this inexpensive little South Australian gem by mere chance in one of my local wine haunts. Craving something bright and crisp to go with the ceasar salad I was making for dinner with pan seared scallops and grilled shrimp spiced with pimente d'Esplette, this was the perfect accompaniment to the dish. Produced by the oldest wine making family in Australia, this unwooded 2009 Y Series Chardonnay is also not too minerally in taste which is often a by-product of whites that spend their aging period in steel rather than wood. It is subtle and inflected with hints of grapefruit and pineapple as stated on the label which is what I typically like and find in Sauvignon Blancs of the Marlborough Region and choose for this very reason, so this was a welcome surprise and what I had hoped I would find from an un-oaked, unwooded wine from Australia...it did not disappoint. So in a nutshell, if this is what you prefer as well, this wine would be a satisfying second choice from Yalumba wine producers who are perhaps best known for their amazing dessert wines. I believe I paid $11.99 for the bottle and I probably would have paid as much as $20.00 for it based on my experience. Try it for yourself and enjoy. JKBKwine

I generally like the oakey qualities of chardonnay, but this was a very nice, crisp wine with white peaches, apricots and sweet white corn. Very clean. - Tasted at Marche` Bacchus 8/8/09

Pale straw with light green hues, the Yalumba Y Series Unwooded Chardonnay displays aromas of honeydew melon and nashi pear, with hints of grapefruit and pineapple. The palate is silky with flavours of ripe nectarines, guava and grapefruit with a fresh acid finish. Serve with Thai chicken salad or gnocchi with sauteed prawns and a burnt butter sauce.
