Yalumba Cabernet-Shiraz Blend Eden Valley the Reserve 2002

Winemaker's Notes:

This stunning Shiraz is one of the greatest wines made in South Australia. The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz The Reserve (a blend of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon and 26% Shiraz aged 20 months in 70% new French hogsheads and 30% in neutral French wood) boasts superb intensity, richness, body, and power. Smoky, truffle-like aromas intermixed with blackberries, cassis, burning embers, charcoal, and licorice soar from the glass of this opaque purple-colored, full-throttle, meaty, super-rich and concentrated wine. Superbly well-balanced, it is a candidate for 20-30 years of aging. ROBERT PARKER

Yalumba was founded in 1849 by Samuel Smith, British migrant and English brewer, who had brought his family to Angaston seeking a new life. After purchasing a 30-acre parcel of land just beyond the southern-eastern boundary of Angaston, Smith and his son began planting the first vines by moonlight. Samuel named his patch "Yalumba" – aboriginal for "all the land around". Six generations and more than 150 years later Yalumba, Australia's oldest family owned winery, has grown in size and stature, embodying all that has made the Australian wine success story the envy of winemakers the world over. Yalumba wines have a style all of their own and each have been influenced by a diverse range of elements. Elements Yalumba likes to call 'the controllables', such as the Yalumba Vine Nursery and on-site cooperage – as well as other factors that cannot be emulated by any other winery. Yalumba’s history and tradition combined with a reputation for innovation. Mint, well-balanced but not too interesting to me. Slightly tannic.

This is a beautiful red wine. Lots of cherries and dried fruit on the nose, with a beautifully smooth finish.

Rich dark fruit on the nose, slightly tannic with complex yet balanced flavors. Lovely wine with a meal or on its own
