Food Pairings for Yalumba Cabernet Sauvignon Coonawarra the Cigar the Menzies
Since its inaugural vintage in 1987, The Menzies, named after Sir Robert Menzies, politician and red wine enthusiast, has continued to grow in stature and quality. Cabernet Sauvignon grapes used for The Menzies are estate grown at Yalumba's Coonawarra vineyard, an exceptional site in the heart of Coonawarra's legendary terra rossa strip. Yalumba ‘The Cigar’ is a new wine from the Yalumba Coonawarra Estate. Sibling to ‘The Menzies’, this wine is made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon harvested from The Menzies Estate vineyards. Named for the unique cigar-shaped strip of rich red terra rossa soil which defines Coonawarra’s wine region. Today, Coonawarra vineyard land is prized like a precious gem. 'The Cigar' shows deep magenta in colour with a nose of full intensity, this is a brooding wine showing leather, dark chocolate and high tones of cassis and jujube fruit pastilles. The palate surprises as it is not the brute the nose suggests. It is a medium bodied wine with fruit flavours of dark cherries and blackberries. The tannins are silky smooth and act in harmony with the fruit for a lingering finish. A superb wine for game meats - particuarly tasty with roast duck- rich casseroles or heavy stews.
