After purchasing a 30-acre parcel of land just beyond the southern-eastern boundary of Angaston, Smith and his son began planting the first vines by moonlight. Samuel named his patch "Yalumba" – aboriginal for "all the land around". Six generations and more than 150 years later Yalumba, Australia's oldest family owned winery, has grown in size and stature, embodying all that has made the Australian wine success story the envy of winemakers the world over. Yalumba wines have a style all of their own and each have been influenced by a diverse range of elements. Elements Yalumba likes to call 'the controllables', such as the Yalumba Vine Nursery and on-site cooperage – as well as other factors that cannot be emulated by any other winery. Yalumba’s history and tradition combined with a reputation for innovation. On an unseasonally chilly day last month in CT, while pouring at an afternoon trade tasting, I fell in love with Yalumba Antique Tawny big time! The lovely nutty, molasses aromas, the rich caramel flavors, the warmth, the simple deliciousness. Must get my hands on this to have at home!

A fabulous find. How can a tawny port be so affordable for such quality? Beautiful nose, warmth and flavour. This port was an instant hint - and the only problem with it is that it is so difficult to find locally.

My husband and I are kind of picky about port, and we love this one! we keep it in stock for guests after dinner, etc. It's on the mellow side, rather than spicy or citrusy.

Deep tawny with green tinges around the edges. The bouquet is intense featuring dried fruits, chocolate and caramel. Elegant brandy spirit adds sweet vanillin and oak complexity. On the palate it is rich and soft in the middle. Complex rancio flavors with persistent nutty caramel aftertaste. Fine spirit characters balance the sweetness producing an elegant drying finish.

Rich dark and unctuous its layers of crhme br{lie walnut hazelnut and coffee mingling easily against lovely hints of molasses. The finish brings it all together harmoniously and lingers beautifully. Drink now. 50 cases imported. -Harvey Steiman Wine Spectator.

With an average age of 15 years, Yaluma's Antique Tawny is produced from the finest barrels. Intense wood aging gives the bouquet flavors of mocha, caramel and dried figs. Elegant dry finish.

Yalumba is a fabulous source of antique fortifieds that often sell for a song. The extraordinary non-vintage Museum Release Antique Tawny exhibits a medium amber color along with notes of prunes, sweet berries, raisins, spice, and jammy, overripe strawberries. Believed to be from a 20-year-old solera, it is delicious, but unlikely to improve. None of these Australian fortifieds improve in the bottle, but they rarely change and can be kept for a long time. Once opened, they should be consumed within 4-7 days.(Wine Advocate)
