Xanadu Next of Kin Shiraz 2008

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Pretty floral on the nose with green peppercorn spice, jammy red currant fruit, some well-integrated cigar box notes and a little tropical fruit/orange rind. This is very cool, crisp and focused in the mouth. The flavors of currant, boysenberry and plum are fresh and brisk, with very subtle spice, soil and cocoa notes helping to frame the fruit. This is broad in the mouth with small but slightly dry tannins and sufficient acidity, making it an ideal wine for a steak. In fact, it makes me want a steak! The finish is tight and still fresh, but shows a touch more austerity and modest length with licorice and plum skin notes. This is lovely. 89 pts

One of Western Australia's most established wineries, producing quality wines through traditional winemaking techniques, together with an award winning restaurant, Xanadu Wines is 'unmistakably Margaret River'. John and Eithne Lagan arrived at Margaret River in 1968, first planting their vineyard in 1977. The Lagans planted the first vines in what is now one of the region’s oldest vineyards. They named their vineyard Xanadu after the poem Kubla Khan by the romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Xanadu now has a long history of producing wines of distinction. By the early Eighties it was already winning awards, and had begun establishing a reputation as one of the finest wineries in the region, a reputation that is being consolidated since the purchased of Xanadu Wines by the Rathbone family in 2005. Chiles and chocolate in the aroma, with raspberry and blueberry fruit. Little bit of tobacco and traces of menthol. Nice tart fruit in the mouth. Very acidic, with kind of a hot back.
