Wrath Wines Pinot Noir San Saba Vineyard Monterey 2015

External Review by We Speak Wine:

Tasting Notes: Though our estate vineyard shares the same soil as the SLH AVA- Arroyo Gravelly Loam and Hanford Gravelly Sandy Loam- its slightly lower altitude gives it a unique microclimate with cooler nights and warmer days. Deep and dense, the 2015 San Saba Pinot Noir has expansive aromas of spice box that join forest floor and cherry cola on the nose. Structured, vibrant, and savory, this rich Pinot Noir offers bold flavors of spicy dark fruit along with layers of pleasing earthiness and acidity that move effortlessly into a persistent finish. Clones: Clone 828- 48%, 17% each 115 & Pom 4; 9% each 667 and 777 Oak: French oak, 43% new Alc.: 14.3%

Our Estate San Saba Vineyard is sheltered in a nook just below the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA, roughly 25 miles southeast of the town of Monterey. Our climate is heavily influenced by the morning fog and afternoon winds from the nearby Pacific Ocean. This is a cool site with little rainfall and one of the longest growing seasons in the world. Our unusual climate allows us produce ripe, concentrated wines of exceptional balance. Our site’s soils are primarily composed of Arroyo Gravelly Loam and Hanford Gravely Sandy Loam. The Hanford Gravely Sandy Loam comes from the SLH bench just above our vineyard. In addition to its excellent drainage properties, our site is essentially free of disease and pests allowing us to plant and farm a portion of our property with own-rooted vines. Read less

This is a tremendous wine with extraordinary depth and complexity. From color to aromatics to flavors, this is a dark, serious wine. Earth, plums, bark and a dash of anise are the recurrent themes. The palate is dense but perfectly balanced thanks to the firm acidity.

Combines density with structure, depth and finesse, built around tiers of wild berry, blueberry, cola and loamy earth, ending with a long, layered finish. The most complex and complete of the 2009 Wraths. Drink now through 2018.

Medium red. Highly perfumed aromas of red and dark berries, Asian spices and vanilla. Lush, sappy and energetic, offering gently sweet black raspberry and cherry flavors complicated by suave rose pastille and baking spice qualities. Finishes silky and long, with lingering spiciness and good cut.

Rating: 87/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the October 2010 issue. Ample red-cherry fruit is played against notes of woodsy spice and pepper in both the aromas and flavors of this solid, nicely extracted young wine, and, in both, there is a hint of smoke in the background. The wine is firmly structured and seems a little tight and not yet evolved, and we are confident that it will be more polished and more articulate yet once it has had a few years in which to fully bloom.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now. Further bottle aging can improve this wine.
