Woop Woop Shiraz 2016

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Toasty and spicy on the nose with wood tones that are a bit harsh though filled with toasted coconut and allspice notes layered over spicy, roasted red fruits. Broad and fairly transparent in the mouth with attractive red cherry and raspberry, almost strawberry fruit that’s nicely framed with some toasty oak and slightly bitter spice notes. This is moderately full on the palate but remains transparent and fresh, with extracted wood tannins merging on the backend and clipping the slightly bitter, cranberry, plum and licorice toned finish. Pretty easy to drink and while the slight bitterness here might be off-putting to some I find it refreshing. 86pts

From its first production of 141 cases of 1995 Shiraz, Penny's Hill has established a fine reputation for outstanding vineyards from which acclaimed wines have emerged. Very much a part of the recent McLaren Vale landscape, the Penny's Hill story commenced over twenty years ago. From its beginnings on bare grazing land upon which cows and sheep had long trod, the brand is now reflected in some of the very best quality vineyards in the region, fine full-bodied wines which are sold to loyal and appreciative wine lovers not only locally but in all discerning export markets, and a cellar door and restaurant complex recognised nationally for its excellence of food and service, for its iconic location and for its direct links to the farming traditions of the greater region. Welcome to Penny's Hill and its unique story. Read less

Winemaker, Ben Riggs and his team enthused as the fruits of their labour evolved into a full-bodied and flavoursome wine, deep-hued with richly scented aromatics and a long, soft and juicy palate. Of lush mouthfeel, bursting with blackberry, blueberry jam and liquorice, this wine guarantees a true Australian Shiraz experience for consumption over the next 5 years. - Winery

Nice and mellow, with plush fruit and smooth tannins. Perfect for everyday drinking, it’s a wine that works as well on its own as it goes with any savory chicken or lighter beef dish.

Opaque ruby. Sexy, smoke- and spice-accented aromas and flavors of blueberry, cassis and dark cherry. Fleshy and sweet, with a suave floral quality carrying through a gently tannic and persistent finish. Offers outstanding value and is already very easy to drink.

Bright purple. Blackberry, mulberry, violet and licorice on the nose, plus some vanillin oak. Lush, sweet and deep, with vivid flavors of black and blue fruits and a gently smoky oak influence. Finishes with soft tannins and good smoky persistence.

Firm with tannins, displaying modest cherry and toast flavors that push through the medium-weight finish. Drink now.

Deep ruby. Blackberry and cherry preserves on the nose, along with a zesty kick of minerals. Fresh and nervy (especially for a high-octane wine), offering lively red and dark berry flavors. Deeper mocha and licorice qualities gain strength on the finish, which also displays youthful tannic grip. Not an easy style, but shows more depth and structure than most wines at this price point.

Inky ruby. Blackberry, candied violet, sassafras, bitter chocolate and smoky herbs on the nose. Dense and sweet but with tangy, integrated acidity energizing the dark fruit and bitter chocolate flavors. Finishes with sweet tannins and good juicy length.
