Woodward Canyon Columbia Merlot 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

"The 2005 Merlot has 6% Cabernet Franc added to the blend. Purplecolored and slightly muted aromatically, with coaxing, notes of spicebox, red currants, and black cherry emerge. On the palate the wine isfirm, with light tannin...WoodwardCanyon, founded in 1981 by Rick Small, remains one of Washingtonsbenchmarks. Over the years, the winery has had peaks and valleys butthe trend-line has always been in an upward direction. There issomething to be said for continuity."Jay Miller, Wine Advocate # 177, Jun 2008"Good medium ruby. Black raspberry, darkchocolate and deep oak tones on the nose. Sweet, lush and rich, withnoteworthy depth to the flavors of black raspberry, cassis, chocolateand spices. A big, broad, mouthfilling merlot that finishes withsubstantial ripe, dusty tannins and very good length."90 pointsStephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Nov/Dec 07

Since that time, the winery has consistently produced premium, award-winning cabernet sauvignons and merlots as well as chardonnays. Early on Rick determined that quality would take precedence over quantity. Consequently, Woodward Canyon has remained small, increasing its production from 1,200 cases in 1981 to our current production of about 17,000 cases. About 7,000 of this total production is Nelms Road, Woodward Canyon's second label. Click here to read more about Nelms Road. Woodward Canyon is a founding member of the Walla Walla Valley Wine Alliance and of Walla Walla Valley Vinea, the Winegrower's Sustainable Trust. Woodward Canyon Winery is located in Lowden, about 13 miles west of Walla Walla, Washington. Our tasting room is a restored 1870's farmhouse. Read less
