Woodward Canyon 'Artist Series Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Member Review by jtryka:

The wine itself is a lovely deep, inky purple at the center that melds into a bright ruby along the edges. The nose just seems to grab you by the collar and really let's you know that you're about to sip something truly sublime, with rich black fruit notes, leather and cedar all dancing in your mind. The taste is wonderfully complex, with some bright fruit at the outset, blackberry, cassis that transitions effortlessly to some warm spice notes of black pepper and dried herbs. The finish is divine, as the tannins are nicely structured and integrated to support a wonderfully complex finish that seems to last forever. Located in the Walla Walla Valley appellation of Washington State, Woodward Canyon Winery was started in 1981 by Rick Small and his wife, Darcey Fugman-Small. Since that time, the winery has consistently produced premium, award-winning cabernet sauvignons and merlots as well as chardonnays. Early on Rick determined that quality would take precedence over quantity. Consequently, Woodward Canyon has remained small, increasing its production from 1,200 cases in 1981 to our current production of about 17,000 cases. About 7,000 of this total production is Nelms Road, Woodward Canyon's second label. Click here to read more about Nelms Road. Woodward Canyon is a founding member of the Walla Walla Valley Wine Alliance and of Walla Walla Valley Vinea, the Winegrower's Sustainable Trust. Woodward Canyon Winery is located in Lowden, about 13 miles west of Walla Walla, Washington. Our tasting room is a restored 1870's farmhouse. Read less

Thick, ripe and richly endowed, it keeps its black fruit, ripe tannins and liquorous barrel notes all in proportion, and pulls in top ight fruit from Champoux, Sagemoor, the estate vineyard and other select sites. Earth, cedar and tobacco notes.

Medium-weight and approachable, despite the chewy tannins exerting a grip on the smoky cherry and licorice flavors. Drink now through 2013. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.

Earth and tobacco flavors weave through the chunky cherry and black tea character, making this more savory than most. Yet has the structure to age. Definitely worth cellaring. Best after 2010.

Dense and chewy, with ripe cherry and currant flavors, finishing with a smoky note. A big wine with richness and tannins that need to soften. Drink now through 2012.
