Woodside Valley Estate Chardonnay Margaret River le Bas 2004

Member Review by Philip James:

This is a fantastic high end chardonnay. 94/100 in James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion 2007. Almost a year in oak. A very subtly rich, vanilla, wine with great fruits and spice.

Inspired by the French voyages of discovery to map the Australian coastline (1801-1803) led by commander Thomas Nicolas Baudin, principal Peter Woods and his dedicated team undertook their own joint expedition to discover something truly individual and unique. Defying accepted expert opinion south facing slopes were planted in the Gunyulgup Valley, a well-defined valley running north from Abbeys farm road less than 5 kilometres inland from the coast and developed from a farm purchased by Peter Woods in 1998. The result is the Baudin Collection and clearly reflects the craftsmanship, attention to details and meticulous care taken in the production of these exceptional wines, which are the truest expression of the character and quality of Northern Margaret River fruit. Woodside Valley Estate is truly an ultra premium boutique producer with a total annual production of between 1000 and 1500 cases, distributed around Australia and internationally. Both unique and distinctly Margaret River in style, each wine of the Baudin Collection is named in honour of a member of the French expedition. Names that were chosen to reflect the handcrafted characters of the individual wines and the shared sense of purpose of the Baudin collection, to create iconic wines from the Northern Margaret River. The Baudin Cabernet Sauvignon, named in honour of the commander himself, is a powerful rich wine with complex layers of flavour and fabulous ageing potential. The Bissy Merlot bearing the moniker of Parisian astronomer Frederik Bissy is elegant with an enticing bouquet and open display of varietal character with generous length. The Bonnefoy Shiraz, a tribute to midshipman Louis Bonnefoy de Montbazin, evinces complex slightly spicy yet classically structured true MR Shiraz, soft and powerful. The Le Bas Chardonnay, honouring second-in-command Alexandre le bas de Sainte Croix, is characterized by its lean elegant structure and powerful palate full of ripe stonefruit and citrus. Read less

An Oaky Chard...great if you like that sort of thing, avoid it if you don't. Though I will say it's not as offensively oaked as some CA chards.
