The Robert Mondavi Winery was founded in 1966 after a family split with the Charles Krug Winery, which had been founded by Robert’s father.  After heading out on his own, Robert settled on land in Napa valley, and in particular the famed To Kalon Vineyard in the Rutherford district. The original plot in To Kalon Vineyard was only 12 acres, but today there are 450 acres under vine. The Robert Mondavi Winery also includes the Wappo Hill Vineyard, which is a 400 acre plot in the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley. Within a year of its inception, the Robert Mondavi Winery proved to be a true pioneer, not only with the establishment of his winery but also by introducing and popularizing the use of French oak barrels for wine, European wine techniques, and the bottling of varietal wines. Robert Mondavi Winery only uses French Oak barrels for storing wine, and his influence and success led to the practice’s prevalence. Among Mondavi’s greatest successes one would have to count the creation of the Fume Blanc moniker for Sauvignon Blanc as well as the introduction of his benchmark Napa Valley Reserve Cabernet. Today Robert Mondavi’s legacy is carried on under the watchful eye of his wife who works with the current winemakers Genevieve Janssens, Gustavo Gonzalez, and Richard Arnold to ensure that today’s Robert Mondavi wines deliver the elegance, appeal, and character that Robert had intended. This smells woody and a bit weedy with notes of coffee grinds, geraniums, and dirty mushrooms adding complexity. A bit dull on entry and both extracted, with over steeped tea tannins, and a touch sweet, though with plenty of balancing acids. This is slightly candied and slightly medicinal with a smith brothers cough drop flavor undercut my cold mocha tones. Dry and hard on the modest, cedary finish. You could drink this in a pinch. 79pts

nose: yellow apple, pear, "gummy bear" candy, caramel... taste: a bit spicy, some cork wood and I can't recognize the fruit here... something like pitaya ?! have no idea what it is but anyway it's a tasty "wine"... if it is a wine)))

Smooth and velvety, layers of lush dark fruit flavors. Surprisingly drinkable for the low price.

So what we have here is a quality 2000 Zinfandel from Lodi (that most people won’t give the time of day since the label says Woodbridge on it). Great mellow Zin with only 13.5% alcohol, not the normal killer from Amador or El Dorado Counties in California. But with the lower alcohol content it really opens up the Zinfandel fruit. What you will taste on this one is the following: Blackberries, ripe raspberries, slight black currant, and a mellow spice on the finish. So if you subtle (or not so subtle) wine snobs can get past the Woodbridge label you will be in for a bottle that will be empty by the end of the evening (even if you are alone).

I'm amazed it is even called wine. Low quality grape juice.

A delicious balance between elegant fruitiness and rich complexity. Soft, silky black cherry and plum flavors from Merlot, with deep blackberry and spice character of Cabernet.

Appealing layers of ripe cherry, berry and spice. Aging in small French and American oak barrels gives warm vanilla tones to the rich Cabernet character and enhances the long, velvety finish.

Granatrubin.
