Wines of Substance Cabernet Sauvignon Charles Smith Columbia Valley 2015

External Review by WineExpress.com:

Superstar winemaker Charles Smith saw a great opportunity when the Wines of Substance label became available. The Wine Spectator reported that "He purchased the brand in 2013 and has re-thought the idea. "If you're making a brand called Wines of Substance, shouldn't the wines be substantial?" He asked. He's making the new wines in the same style as his own Charles Smith and K Vintners, using open-top fermentors and indigenous yeast to ferment grapes from good vineyards. He has no plans to purchase bulk wine." This 2014 Cab is sourced from just 2 premium vineyards; Goose Ridge, a south-facing site adjacent to Red Mountain, planted in 1999 that receives less than 8 inches of rainfall annually. It consistently yields fruit of exceptional character and complexity; and Frenchman Hills, about a 30-minute drive north of the Wahluke Slope. It's a cooler site, partly because of its higher elevation at 1650 feet. Grapes here hang longer without accumulating excessive sugar (and thus, higher alcohols) while still managing to retain beautiful acidity. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon; it macerated 42 days on the skins and was aged 12 months on the lees in 50% new French oak barrels. The Wine Advocate scored this 92 points saying "One of the best values I've tasted in a long time, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon from the team at K Vintners was hand-harvested, natively fermented and aged all in French oak. Smoking good notes of cassis, black currants and hints of plum all emerge from this rich, beautifully textured, layered beauty that has solid tannic grip, a silky, elegant texture and a great finish. It has real elegance and finesse and is a dark fruited, unctuous beauty to drink over the coming 3-4 years."

First there was K Vintners, then the Magnificent Wine Company and now winemaker Charles Smith brings you his latest revelation. Charles Smith Wines: The Modernist Project is a response to how people generally consume wine today, that is immediately…as in immediately after being purchased at a market, restaurant or bar, to be drunk straight away. Wine in this category is typically ether simple, or is a wine that would be much better a few years down the road. ‘Modernist Project’ wines are about putting as much into the bottle as possible. The intent is to create wines to be enjoyed now, but with typicity with regards to variety—that is merlot that tastes like merlot—and to the vineyard—wine that tastes like where it was grown. The wines are full of flavor, balanced, and true to their place of origin. Owner-winemaker Charles Smith with his big hair, kick ass attitude and bold packaging arrived in the Walla Walla Valley following eleven years in Scandinavia managing rock bands. Originally hailing from northern California, he has been involved with wine personally and professionally his entire life. Read less

The Wine Advocate did a barrel tasting and scored it 90-92 saying "The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon should be just as good as the 2013. Seeing all native yeast, 42 days on skins, 12 months in French oak and bottled unfined and unfiltered, it offers classic plum and blackberry fruit intermixed with ample licorice, toasted bread and violet aromas and flavors. Concentrated, balanced and the real deal, buy it by the case and drink it over the coming 4-5 years."
