Wine Red Beychevelle 1986

94+ points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): The 1986 vintage has produced an absolutely classic example of Château Beychevelle, but this wine is still many years from its apogee. The deep, pure and refined nose soars from the glass in a blaze of sweet cassis, dark berries, cigar smoke, a complex base of soil, a touch of pepperiness, coffee and a deft framing of new wood. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very, very pure, with a great signature of soil, a sappy core of fruit, tangy acids and plenty of firm, ripe tannins perking up the very long, focused finish. The balance here is absolutely exceptional, but this wine will need the lion's share of another decade in the cellar to really start to blossom and deliver all of its charms. A great, young vintage of Beychevelle. 2020-2100. (May/Jun 2011)

  Château Beychevelle is a historic estate and Grand Cru Classé wine in Saint Julien, Bordeaux that dates back to the 15th century.   Château Beychevelle is a historic estate and Grand Cru Classé wine in Saint Julien, Bordeaux that dates back to the 15th century. During the reign of Henri III of France, the estate was the home of Jean-Louis Nogaret de la Valette, the Duke of Epernon, who was so powerful that ships who passed before his Château had to lower their sails. Hence the proprietary motif of the ship with the “basse-voile” (lowered sail) and the griffin, who according to legend would guard the cellar of wine god Dionysius.    Wines have been produced here since the 17th century. It was classified as a “fourth growth” (Quatrième Cru) in the 1855 Classification. It has passed through the hands of many owners since its begninnings, and is now part of the Grande Millésimes de France. The vineyards are planted with 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, with an average vine age of 25 years. One of my favorites. Which I probably buy more than the others - less expensive years - because it is more accessible. And I tend to see it more in DC than some of the other Bordeaux (outnumbered in popularity by California & Oregon here)- which are very expensive and look like they've been kept in a open box in the bright sun for a couple of years.

While quite outstanding and deserving to be in any conscientiously stocked wine cellar, the 1986 Beychevelle does not quite have the extraordinary concentration and potential for longevity that I had thought it would. Nevertheless, this is still one of the best Beychevelles in the last 30 years. With its black/ruby color and huge bouquet of roasted fruit, this full-bodied, concentrated, rich wine should not be drunk before the mid-1990s.

Remarkably complex with rich, concentrated, tannic currant, spice and anise flavors, wrapped in smoky, cedary oak that gets tastier with every sip. It's best to wait until this one can fully develop, in 1997 or '98. Wine Spectator. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 1986 Beychevelle 750ml

While quite outstanding and deserving to be in any conscientiously stocked wine cellar the 1986 Beychevelle does not quite have the extraordinary concentration and potential for longevity that I had thought it would. Nevertheless this is still one of the best Beychevelles in the last 30 years. With its black/ruby color and huge bouquet of roasted fruit this full-bodied concentrated rich wine should not be drunk before the mid-1990s. Anticipated maturity: Now-2010. Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.
