Willamette Valley Pinot Noir Whole Cluster Fermented 2011

Winemaker's Notes:

Refreshing as liquid fruit salad in a glass. This wine opens with lively red fruit aromas complimented by hints of anise, violets and a slight earthiness. Flavors mirror aromas, leading with a backbone of cherry, followed by sweet-tart strawberry and cranberry flavors with notes of vanilla and spice. Plush, fruity tannins and lively, balanced acidity lead to a crisp, lip-smacking finish.

Founded in 1983 by Oregon native, Jim Bernau, with the dream of creating world-class Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley Vineyards has grown from a bold idea into one of the region’s leading wineries, earning the title “One of America’s Great Pinot Noir Producers,” from Wine Enthusiast Magazine. Willamette Valley Vineyards approach is to grow, by hand, the highest quality fruit to produce wines of distinction, that are truly expressive of the varietal and the place where they are grown. All the vineyards, the Estate Vineyard, Tualatin Estate, and Elton vineyard, have been certified sustainable through LIVE (Low Input Viticulture and Enology) and Salmon Safe programs since 1997. In 2007, Willamette Valley Vineyards became the first winery in the world to use sustainable cork stoppers certified by the Rainforest Alliance and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) standards. In 2010, Willamette Valley Vineyards released their first Oregon Certified Sustainable Wine (OCSW). Willamette Valley Vineyards commitment to sustainable practices in the vineyard and winery is based on the convictions that as stewards of the land they have an obligation to walk as softly as possible, and that winegrapes grown naturally in healthy soils produce superior quality wines. Willamette Valley Vineyards also produces wines under the Griffin Creek and Tualatin Estate labels. Read less

This tasting note is for their 2012 vintage, sorry.I had this in their tasting room. This wine was intended to be their take on Beaujolais, with carbonic maceration-fermentation and 90 days from harvest to bottle! No surprise here, this wine ain't your normal Oregon pinot noir. Couldn't agree more with the previous review - we both had "liquid fruit salad in a glass" in our tasting notes! This wine is refreshing and fruity, with notes of strawberry and bubblegum, but also still dry and - surprise - interesting! It still keeps some of the complexity and doesnt just taste like alcoholic grape juice (think bad Beaujolais). Moderate length. I normally don't like the simple fruit forward wines, and I still really like this.

As refreshing as liquid fruit salad in a glass, this wine opens with vibrant aromas of cherry cola, plum and cinnamon that leap from the glass. Flavors mirror aromas with a fruity and sweet entry followed by explosive flavors of cranberry and raspberry. These flavors are highlighted by a hint of white pepper and smoky overtones. The medium-bodied mouthfeel is round and juicy with balanced tannins leading to a lip smacking finish. This wine is meant to drink young. Enjoy now through 2015. - Winery
