New Zealand’s Central Otago is the World’s most Southerly wine growing region. It’s also the place Matt Kramer called “the next gold mine” and “a pinot noir player”. And the that's because the Pinot's from this region are so intense and filled with character. They are also, in most cases, fairly pricy. That's what makes Wild Rock Cupid's Arrow so special. This ripe Central Otago Pinot is priced right, so under try this latest craze from New Zealand see what the all the fuss is about.
Wild Rock is an interesting New Zealand company, an off-shoot of the hugely successful Craggy Range, making wines from fruit they purchase from every corner of New Zealand. They've gone to hotbed of Pinot Noir, Central Otago, for this red, which spent six months in French oak, only 15% of which was new. This has a fine, aromatic nose, with some exotic incense notes, juicy red cherry and summer berry fruit and a touch of something sage-like and herbal. On the palate it is crisp and juicy, with a fresh fruit and a crisp tannin and acid axis giving it some vivacity and life. The creaminess and tobacco and spice character of the oak adds a little depth to a light, slightly lean, but nice expression of Pinot.
The aromas are a mix of bright berry fruit, plums, florals and a background of herbs and wild thyme. The palate is complex and supple with red berry, plum-stone, cherry fruit characters and floral notes. Fine sandy tannins and supporting acidity draw the wine into a long finish. - Winery
