Wild Duck Creek Shiraz Heathcote Springflat Reserve 2000

Winemaker's Notes:

The first Springflat came from our winery block vineyard. It is approximately 2.5 acres, sits on quartz buckshot clay soils and its production is around 2 tones per acre. Planted in 1988, it has now reached maturity and is capable of producing fruit of incredible depth of flavour. Its position protects it from wind, thus creating frost susceptibility. In years of frost, the leaf to fruit ratio is dramatically increased, thus producing wines of exceptional intensity, which led to the discovery of the Duck Muck. Since then, several other vineyards on exceptional sites scattered across the Heathcote region have produced that has made it into the Springflat. By enlarge, these vineyards are 12 years + in age and are dry grown on the Cambrian volcanic soils of the southern part of the Mt Camel range. These vineyards are run to our discression, cropping less than 2 tons per acre, producing complex flavours only their particular sites can, which enables the Springflat Shiraz to broaden in complexity and reliability. Matured in 45% new French and American hogsheads for 15 to 18 months. Recommended to be consumed up to 12 years from release. No filtration. Closed under premium cork or screw cap at the Standing Order Customer’s discression. Approximately 1800 cases made annually.

Residing to the north of the Great Dividing Range in Central Victoria, the region is at elevations between 160m and 380m. For the most part, the soil under vine is of the pre-Cambrian era - red and deep with excellent water holding capacity, although the regions most sort-after and expensive wines come from the predominately clay with granite and quartz inclusions of the Southern and Central sub-regions. The region’s rainfall is evenly distributed between the seasons and the temperature range is defined as temperate, with cooling winds emanating from the south. It is our belief that the Heathcote Wine Region will eventually be divided up into three sub-regions (Northern, Central and Southern) as there is a distinct difference in the flavour and structure of the wines coming from these individual areas. These differences are due to the influences of the local ‘terroir’. Read less

Has impressively ripe flavors, dripping with blackberry, plum and anise on a steely frame, finishing with Victoria's distinctive crispness. Give it time to develop. Best from 2004 through 2010.

The 1999 Springflat Shiraz has dense, opaque purple color, a real intense, minty, creme de cassis nose, with some spicy new oak. the wine is certainly not shy at 15.3% alcohol, but the power is well-harnessed, and the wine is primarily; a big, full-bodied, thick, juicy fruit bomb with plenty of texture, purity, and length. It should drink well for 7-8 years, perhaps longer.

The spectacular, opaque purple-colored 1997 Springflat Shiraz is unevolved, but possesses great intensity and promise. Tasting akin to a barrel sample with its flashy display of youthful cassis and blackberry fruit, this thick, rich offering possesses definition that is rare in a wine of such size and extract. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2018.

The 2000 Shiraz Springflat (100% Shiraz with 15% alcohol) was aged 17 months in American oak. It reveals lavish wood, abundant floral and black fruit characteristics intermixed with pepper and earth, and a spicy, fruity, sweet personality. It will provide enjoyment over the next 7-10 years.
