Wild Duck Creek Merlot Heathcote Gerogery East Homestead 2001

External Review by Cellar Link Pty Ltd:

Wild Duck Creek Estate is one of those cult wineries in Australia, based outside of Melbourne, that has achieved much of its acclaim due to a mixture of excellent winemaking techniques (vinification is entirely effected through manual pressing) and a winemaker with a keen sense of what good wine, David Anderson.

Residing to the north of the Great Dividing Range in Central Victoria, the region is at elevations between 160m and 380m. For the most part, the soil under vine is of the pre-Cambrian era - red and deep with excellent water holding capacity, although the regions most sort-after and expensive wines come from the predominately clay with granite and quartz inclusions of the Southern and Central sub-regions. The region’s rainfall is evenly distributed between the seasons and the temperature range is defined as temperate, with cooling winds emanating from the south. It is our belief that the Heathcote Wine Region will eventually be divided up into three sub-regions (Northern, Central and Southern) as there is a distinct difference in the flavour and structure of the wines coming from these individual areas. These differences are due to the influences of the local ‘terroir’. Read less

The Merlot Reserve is rare wine, with only three ever being made. Originally produced from grapes grown in the Alans Cabernet vineyard, the last one made (2001) included grapes from the St Michaels vineyard on the southern part of the Mt Camel range.
