Wild Duck Creek Estate Springflat Shiraz 2000

External Review by Prestige Wine & Spirits:

The spectacular, opaque purple-colored 1997 Springflat Shiraz is unevolved, but possesses great intensity and promise. Tasting akin to a barrel sample with its flashy display of youthful cassis and blackberry fruit, this thick, rich offering possesses definition that is rare in a wine of such size and extract. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2018.

Residing to the north of the Great Dividing Range in Central Victoria, the region is at elevations between 160m and 380m. For the most part, the soil under vine is of the pre-Cambrian era - red and deep with excellent water holding capacity, although the regions most sort-after and expensive wines come from the predominately clay with granite and quartz inclusions of the Southern and Central sub-regions. The region’s rainfall is evenly distributed between the seasons and the temperature range is defined as temperate, with cooling winds emanating from the south. It is our belief that the Heathcote Wine Region will eventually be divided up into three sub-regions (Northern, Central and Southern) as there is a distinct difference in the flavour and structure of the wines coming from these individual areas. These differences are due to the influences of the local ‘terroir’. Read less
Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

The 1999 Springflat Shiraz has dense, opaque purple color, a real intense, minty, creme de cassis nose, with some spicy new oak. the wine is certainly not shy at 15.3% alcohol, but the power is well-harnessed, and the wine is primarily; a big, full-bodied, thick, juicy fruit bomb with plenty of texture, purity, and length. It should drink well for 7-8 years, perhaps longer.

Has impressively ripe flavors, dripping with blackberry, plum and anise on a steely frame, finishing with Victoria's distinctive crispness. Give it time to develop. Best from 2004 through 2010.

The 2000 Shiraz Springflat (100% Shiraz with 15% alcohol) was aged 17 months in American oak. It reveals lavish wood, abundant floral and black fruit characteristics intermixed with pepper and earth, and a spicy, fruity, sweet personality. It will provide enjoyment over the next 7-10 years.
