White Cottage Ranch Merlot Howell Mountain 2009

Member Review by jtryka:

This wine has a nice deep ruby, almost purple color in the glass, and a consistency that makes it shine as a solid example of a good Napa Valley vintage. The nose is filled with spices and rich ripe fruit, with notes of anise, tarragon and black pepper, balanced by sweet aromas of ripe plum, black currant and just the faintest hint of leather. The taste is just superb, with rich, ripe fruit up front, laden with plums and ripe black cherries, giving way to some tart and spicy notes midpalate, easing into a finish with nicely balanced tannins creating a somewhat tight, yet smooth, long finish that seems to last a minute or more! The winemaker Mike Drash has simply knocked the ball out of the park. The vineyard Luna uses nets them between 1.5 and 1.8 tons per acre. Not only is the Luna Merlot so much a departure from the typical soda pop style we are used to from California it will age...anywhere from 10-15 years based on how tight the wine is today.

Deep, moody nose. Dark fruits and a restrained power. Very dense for a merlot, almost cab sauvignon like. Coffee, spice and leather notes.

Rating: 85/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the September 2010 issue. Very much the tight and tart gangly youth at the moment with acidy angles and edges its most memorable traits, this closed and unforthcoming wine grudgingly yields up a bit of sparing, sour-cherry fruit. If and when it might open is not an easily answered question, and the price of finding out is more than we are willing to pay.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Cellar for future drinking. Wine will improve with bottle aging.

Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine ReviewRated 935% Cabernet Sauvignon. We can already hear the complaints that this wine is too ripe, too full and too flavorful, but, while ripe it may be, it is never anything less than wonderfully fruity, and it exhibits extraordinary richness and depth. It is all Merlot in its supple tactile impressions, and yet it shows a nice spine of supporting tannin that brings just the right bit of back-palate grip. There is no let up in either richness or ripe-cherry fruit in its lingering finish, and it promises keep nicely for up a half-dozen years providing that its considerable short-term temptations can be overlooked.Wine Tasting NotesNotes of spice, cedar and blue cheese on the nose evolving into rich black fruit in the mouth with textures of velvet and sweet cedar oak. Medium intensity, with chewy tannins and a spicy exotic weight. Loads of finesse and milk chocolate on the finish.
