Whitcraft Winery Pinot Noir Santa Maria Valley Bien Nacido Vineyard 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

Wine Tasting Notes Burt and Jan Williams vineyard is the jewel in the winery. It stands out because the fruit is so different than what we get from down here. High spices, clove and cinnamon abound with raspberries all around. Lower in alcohol than the other wines but with a fullness that only great vineyards have.

A long-standing member of the Santa Barbara winemaking community, Chris Whitcraft is obsessed with producing the highest quality wines. His signature varietals are pinot noir, chardonnay and syrah. Chris entered the wine profession over 30 years ago, first as a retailer then as a journalist, wholesaler and ultimately a producer of wines. Through this evolution, he built robust relationships with major industry players such as Burt Williams (Williams & Selyem); Dick & John Graff (Chalone); Ken Burnap (Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyards); and Michael Benedict (Sanford & Benedict). These individuals were major influences in Chris' passion for pinot noir - a varietal with amazing potential which is notoriously difficult to master. Working with them, he came to appreciate the importance of selecting the finest grapes and, in the winemaking process, enabling the natural qualities of that fruit to come through. Chris' early success in producing high-quality wines enabled him to secure grape contracts from leading producers throughout California (e.g. Aubaine and Morning Dew Ranch, Stolpman and Olivos Del Mar, Melville), providing the platform for producing consistently outstanding wines. While maintaining that tradition, he also continues to seek out new sources of the highest-quality grapes so that he can deliver ever-improving products to his loyal clientele, those who have discovered through him that "Pinot Noir -- it's not just for breakfast anymore!" decanted 5 hours, ruby with a rusty hue, hot with notes of grass and tar on the nose, notes of cherry, cranberry and watermelon on the palette, a cola finish with notes of cedar

Decanted over 5 hours, same brown tinged ruby as last bottle (one of four bottles had no brown) hot with notes of rose petals, blackberries and baking spices on the nose, fresh, concentrated but soft on the palate, medium-light body with notes of oak, cherry, plum and cranberry, a creamy finish with notes of orange rind, blueberries, cherries, and currants. Appearance aside, this wine could last another year or so easily.

Still needs to decant to blow off the heat on this wine. Seems to be good bottle deviation, and for a lesser bottling 3.5 glasses is very good, but a better bottling (like the one I had last night) is excellent. Glad I bought several!

Wine Tasting NotesLight red color compared to all the other 05s with a great burgundian nose with sweet fruit flavors and finish.

Wine Tasting NotesThe wine is a blend of Bien Nacido Young Vines, Clone 115, Morning Dew Ranch and Melville Vineyards in descending parts and is our loss leader this year. Med. red color, bright cherry nose with a strong Burgundian and pinot nose. Creamy oaky finish with lots of complexity and promise. Years of improvement ahead but accessible now.

Wine Tasting NotesOur second vintage of this beautiful vineyard is very dark and tastes like blackberry jam! (And just about as thick!) It rolls around the mouth like jello its so rich. Its also good now but will get better and better with time if you can stay away from it.

Wine Tasting NotesIm so glad I get these grapes! (Seven years) Santa Rita Hills is a great place to grow pinot and this year is great! Its like the 04 but even more elegant as each year seems to surpass the last. Opulent and very burgundian in the nose, mouth and anywhere else you care to put it! Im very proud of these pinots.
