Whitcraft Pinot Noir Santa Barbara County 4 Soils 2013

Winemaker's Notes:

WHWC Staff Notes: I've always had a soft spot for the Whitcraft wines. I was first introduced to Chris Whitcraft through Burt Williams, founder of Williams-Selyem... With Burt's guidance, he released his first Whitcraft wines in 1985. In 2007, his son Drake took an active role the winery... Father and son worked together on this wine so there is evidence of both their fingerprints in this one. I love the balance... It has the typical Santa Barbara fruit profile with raspberry, a touch of cranberry, and a light nuance of oak to round it out. The texture is that wonderful, silky velvet that I always look for in a good Pinot Noir... - Tim Coles, 9/16/16

A long-standing member of the Santa Barbara winemaking community, Chris Whitcraft is obsessed with producing the highest quality wines. His signature varietals are pinot noir, chardonnay and syrah. Chris entered the wine profession over 30 years ago, first as a retailer then as a journalist, wholesaler and ultimately a producer of wines. Through this evolution, he built robust relationships with major industry players such as Burt Williams (Williams & Selyem); Dick & John Graff (Chalone); Ken Burnap (Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyards); and Michael Benedict (Sanford & Benedict). These individuals were major influences in Chris' passion for pinot noir - a varietal with amazing potential which is notoriously difficult to master. Working with them, he came to appreciate the importance of selecting the finest grapes and, in the winemaking process, enabling the natural qualities of that fruit to come through. Chris' early success in producing high-quality wines enabled him to secure grape contracts from leading producers throughout California (e.g. Aubaine and Morning Dew Ranch, Stolpman and Olivos Del Mar, Melville), providing the platform for producing consistently outstanding wines. While maintaining that tradition, he also continues to seek out new sources of the highest-quality grapes so that he can deliver ever-improving products to his loyal clientele, those who have discovered through him that "Pinot Noir -- it's not just for breakfast anymore!"
