Whistling Dog Cellars Pinot Noir Willamette Valley Nsv 2009

Member Review by Andrew46:

This wine had light floral aromas and hints of red fruit, but the aroma was not the strong point. Smooth and balanced mouth-feel, with a light but not absent tannin structure. Easy to drink without food. To be fair, my taste in red wine runs towards low alc. and high acid compared to most CA wines, so this was just fine for me. I had just received the wine and did not allow it to rest after shipping. Very enjoyable.

At Whistling Dog Cellars we don’t just own the winery and vineyard, we actually do the work. One of us is the primary worker in every single step of our vineyard and winery activities; we have no other employees. Growing and making world-class Pinot is not just our passion, it is our livelihood, it is the only thing we do. We don’t just stake our reputation on it; we stake our family’s welfare on it. Ripening Pinot Noir Grapes We spend almost all of our energy tending the vines. One of us is in the vineyard everyday; in most cases from sunrise to sunset. Using sustainable, dry-farming techniques, we do all that we can to ensure the best growing and ripening conditions, given each season’s unique characteristics. By the time our estate grapes reach the crush pad, every vine has been touched by us at least 25 times since the previous year's harvest. In the winery, on the other hand, we take a minimalist approach and let Nature take its course. Our role is to assist in the winemaking process, not manipulate it. By "assist", we mean that, at most, we sort and destem the grapes, add yeast, punch down the cap, press the wine to settling tank, rack to barrel, add minimal SO2 after MLF, rack to bottling tank, and bottle - that's it. During hot, dry seasons we do not add water or acids to the musts; during cool, wet seasons we do not add sugar or use concentrating techniques. Our wines emphasize the characteristics of the growing season and vineyard; we do not cater to pre-determined, market-driven aroma/taste profiles. Read less

Allen Meadows, Burghound.com January, 2010 “ A very pretty, fresh, airy and restrained red berry fruit nose that includes cranberry, raspberry, cherry and pomegranate before merging seamlessly into…flavors that possess fine detail…on the delicious and lingering finish of solid intensity. This is really quite nice as there is real personality delivered in a stylish package that could easily be approached now with pleasure.”

Allen Meadows, Burghound.com – Issue 33, January 2009 2006 Pinot Noir – NSV: (from the Nuestro Sueño Vineyard - 231 cases bottled unfined and unfiltered at 14.5%; $28). This is also extremely pretty and pure with a strikingly spiced nose of red berry, violets, anise, clove and cinnamon that complements the rich, ripe, round and relatively full-bodied flavors that possess good mid-palate concentration and culminate in a sappy and slightly sweet finish that is delicious and persistent if slightly warm. The sweetness is probably oak derived and is a bit too much for my preferences but to the wine’s credit, it is an extremely seductive and stylish effort. 89/2010+
