Weingut Stadt Krems Grüner Veltliner Kremstal Dac 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

Stadt Krems is a rejuvenated estate, which has really come into its own in the last couple of years. In 2006 Stadt Krems produced perhaps the most deliciously accessible Rieslings in this vintage, and the 2007s show a further leap in quality. Riesling Kögl, from the schist terroir just above the winery is exceptional in 2007 There was need of renovation of both vineyards and cellar when Fritz Miesbauer joined in 2003, and the next stage of development - a new construction to extend winemaking, office and tasting facilities is now complete. Thirty five hectares in the classic heart of the Kremstal are farmed, almost exclusively with Grüner Veltliner and Riesling. At this end of the Kremstal, almost bordering Wachau, there is a high proportion of conglomerate rock, lending real minerality to the wines. This perhaps makes for slightly tighter wines, but the ripeness and texture lurks just below the surface.

The second source was the generous bequest of the imperial Burggrave of Krems, Ulrich von Dachsberg, who presented the town with vineyards in 1452. With over 550 years of history, Weingut Stadt Krems is one of the oldest wine-producers in Austria, and even in the whole of Europe. The clash of the Western Baltic oceanic climate with that of East Pannonia leads to an exciting interplay and strong climatic variations between day and night, and all that in a narrow space, but the mighty Danube helps to balance them out. Naturally, the vegetation is affected by such sharp variations in temperature and this proves to be very beneficial for winegrowing: it is precisely such conflicting climatic influences that give the wines their fruity taste and bouquet.
