Weingut Max Ferd. Richter Riesling Kabinett Wehlener Sonnenuhr 2011

Winemaker's Notes:

"Slightly yoghurty nose - but in the best way. White peaches. Creamy with a little dab of lime, a suggestion of sweet juicy white peach. Like biting into a fresh vineyard peach. Delicate and fine and everything a Kabinett should be. (MS & TC)" 16 out of 20 points, Jancis Robinson's Purple Pages (07/12)<br/><br/> VINEYARD:<br/> "When, as in Wehlen, a sundial was installed on the most prominent rock in the steep vineyards, it gave its name to the surrounding vineyard. The Sonnenuhr vineyard is 65 hectares in all, facing south south-west directly opposite the village of Wehlen. It lies in the middle of the long curving steep slate slope by the Mosel, stretching five kilometres from Bernkastel to Zeltingen. Here lie the great vineyards - Bernkasteler Doctor and Badstube - Graacher Himmelreich and Dompropst - Wehlener Sonnenuhr - Zeltinger Sonnenuhr and Schlossberg. The prescious wines from the Sonnenuhr vineyard created solid wealth ,and in the early days of this century the citizens of Wehlen were able to build a suspension bridge, which is today a historical monument and, like the sundial, a local landmark. The only other villages which could afford to build a bridge in those days were Bernkastel-Kues and Traben-Trarbach."<br/><br/> "The Wehlener Sonnenuhr was a comparatively recent acquisition in the 300 years of Weingut Max Ferd.Richter's history. In 1972 the first parcel of vines was bought. It was next to the sundial in the heart of the vineyard. This was followed by the purchase of other parcels over the next few years. In general, the wines from Wehlener Sonnenuhr are wonderfully elegant with delicate aromas." -Winery<br/><br/> WINERY:<br/> "The estate of MAX FERD.RICHTER has been in the ownership of the family for more than 300 years. Today this enterprise is one of the leading producers of top RIESLING-wines in the heart of the central Mosel area with total holdings of 40 acres and an annual production of about 10,500 cases." -Winery<br/><br/>

Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

One of the overlooked greats in Germany in my opinion. This is still drinking gorgeously to this day.

Doctor Richter has fashioned an impressive line-up of 2001s, harnassing the vintagersquo;s ripeness while maintaining seamless balance. White peaches, spices, stones, and minerals can be found in the aromatics of the 2001 Riesling Kabinett Wehlener Sonnenuhr. Medium-bodied and satin-textured, it regales the palate with thick layers of apples, pears, and assortic exotic fruits. An extravagant wine, it is boisterous and fleshy. Projected maturity: Nowndash;2008.

Peach, apple, honeysuckle, and heliotrope scent the Richter 2009 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett, which demonstrates surprising brightness and cut (traceable to high acidity) for the vintage. Lip-smacking salinity and underlying wet stone inform the juicy and persistently perfumed finish of this delicate and refreshing Kabinett that will merit following for at least 15 years. Incidentally, as part of the current Flurbereinigung of Wehlener Sonnenuhr, these vines are being ripped out and Richterrsquo;s new acreage will be planted with two Geisenheim clones.

Naturally light and silky, featuring fine fruit flavor with a milder acidic balance.

Fruity but elegant, from vines strategically placed around a sundial to collect the best sunlight. Incredibly ripe from a very warm vintage, this wine is loaded with white fruit, stone fruit and floral notes. Has a sweet, lingering finish.

Richter acquired their first parcel of land in the Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard in 1972. The 1997 Kabinett is a very intense wine with a full nose possessing bracing acidity and citrus notes and a long, minerally finish. This is perfect sipping wine that also will go well with garden salads.
