J.J. Prüm is a member of the Großer Ring Verband Deutscher Prädikats- und Qualitätsweingüter. The estate has 14 acres of holdings in the Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Bernkasteler Lay, Bernkasteler Badstube and Zeltinger Sonnenuhr vineyards. Only Riesling is grown and harvested at these sites. The most important of these sites are Wehlener Sonnenuhr and Graacher Himmelreich, in terms of both quantity and quality for the winery. Seventy percent of the vines are ungrafted. Depending on the vintage, the average annual production is 10,000 to 13,000 cases of wine. Stuart Pigott says of J.J. Prum that "since the early 1920's its wines have been among Germany’s best Rieslings with the Mosel’s vivacious aroma and racy elegance in its highest form". Wine writer Stephen Brook says that "The wines, whether a modest Kabinett or an opulent Beerenauslese, are the epitome of filigree elegance: light in body but intense in flavour, exquisitely balanced and precisely tuned, and capable of the most extra-ordinary longevity".  Read less

Pungent aromas of slate and flowers give way to peach and lime in this unevolved Riesling. The texture is supersilky, with great harmony among all the elements. Terrific length. Needs time. Best from 2014 through 2040.

Pale golden yellow. Subdued bouquet of passion fruit, nut oil and acacia blossom. The lusciously sweet tropical fruit flavors are highlighted by a refreshing gingery acidity that keeps the palate light in spite of the wineandrsquo;s density. Although elegant and aristocratic, this auslese is also quite full-bodied, finishing astoundingly long, on a spicy botrytis note.

The 2003 Riesling Auslese Wehlener Sonnenuhr displays hints of minerals lurking below its wafts of sulfur. A seamless, creamy-textured wine, it is easygoing, plump, and exhibits flavors reminiscent of poached pears, cotton candy, and sweet minerals. Drink it between 2010 and 2020.

Bright metallic-gold. Moderately full-bodied. Full acidity. Highly extracted. Flowers, stone fruits slate. Attractive, deep floral aromas reveal a heavyweight, rich style with strong minerally notes through the finish. Undeveloped as yet, this has great structure and needs time.

Rather like apple sauce powdered with cinnamon. Creamy and mouthfilling without being the least bit heavy. Ethereal finish of apple blossom and vanillin.

While Pranduuml;m is renowned for his wines from the Wehlener Sonnenuhr, this Auslese demonstrated that the wines from the neighboring vineyard of Graacher Himmelreich can be equally as refined. This is creamy in texture and tone, its plush flavors of apricot and white peach backed by a savory minerality. The firm acidity keeps it feeling racy and fresh, with an intensely slatey minerality turning more prominent on the finish.

Wow. This rsquo;97 Auslese almost overpowers the sensory receptors with its succulent, pure aromas and flavors of peach, apple and slate, rapierlike acidity and brilliant clarity. But itrsquo;s never too much, as it remains balanced and harmonious all the way through. Drink now through 2010.
