Weingut Christ Red Blend Mephisto 2006

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Dark and a bit hard on the nose with a woody, spearminty overlay to the lightly floral core of red fruit, with shavings of dark chocolate adding some complexity. Light and fresh up front with dark berry fruit flavors that are a bit anonymous. There’s a distinct mintiness in the mouth as well and, while the wine is fairly well-balanced, there are a lot of obvious wood tannins here. This seems to have good fruit and the finish shows some nice notes of sliced red plums and berries, but the wood treatment here seems to be a bit too aggressive for the fruit. A bit chunky and inelegant. 84pts

Rainer Christ first came to the attention of the Vienna wine scene with his ‘Full Moon’ Pinot Blanc. Harvested and vinified according to the phases of the moon, Rainer successfully placed himself ahead of the curve within the growing biodynamic movement in Vienna. Raised in a 400 year old family tradition with some very old vines on the Bisamberg, just north east of the city, Rainer cultivates the soils with his father, Franz. Five distinct microclimates allow them to fine tune varietals to perfection. Although Gruener Veltliner is dominant, comprising 37% of the total yield, Rainer is also dedicating more and more attention to the white Burgundy varietals and red wines. As a founding member of ‘Wien Wein’ (Vienna Wine) Christ is helping to establish definitions and guidelines for reintroducing the increasingly popular ‘Gemischte Satz’(literally:‘mixed set’- a wine made from a number of different varietals planted in the same vineyard, harvested and vinified at the same time). As ‘terroir’ becomes the international wine buzz word, one doesn’t get more terroir driven than this. Despite the ultra modern appearance of the family winery and heuriger rebuilt in 2006, the wines remain gravity fed, unfiltered and biodynamic. “Wine requires enthusiasm and passion,” says Rainer Christ. “For making wine, there must be the deep desire to create something extraordinary”.
