Weingut Christ Blauer Zweigelt 2007

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This smells of crushed berries with a touch of fresh juniper and notes of earth, a very light dusting of vanilla, with touches of marzipan and violets. On entry this is soft and broad, fruity and fleshy with bright acid and soft tannins supporting the bright, juicy berry fruited mid-palate. There’s a little spice on the backend and this gains good focus in the mouth, finishing with a firm, earthy tone. This is fruity, uncomplicated and refreshing. 88pts

Rainer Christ first came to the attention of the Vienna wine scene with his ‘Full Moon’ Pinot Blanc. Harvested and vinified according to the phases of the moon, Rainer successfully placed himself ahead of the curve within the growing biodynamic movement in Vienna. Raised in a 400 year old family tradition with some very old vines on the Bisamberg, just north east of the city, Rainer cultivates the soils with his father, Franz. Five distinct microclimates allow them to fine tune varietals to perfection. Although Gruener Veltliner is dominant, comprising 37% of the total yield, Rainer is also dedicating more and more attention to the white Burgundy varietals and red wines. As a founding member of ‘Wien Wein’ (Vienna Wine) Christ is helping to establish definitions and guidelines for reintroducing the increasingly popular ‘Gemischte Satz’(literally:‘mixed set’- a wine made from a number of different varietals planted in the same vineyard, harvested and vinified at the same time). As ‘terroir’ becomes the international wine buzz word, one doesn’t get more terroir driven than this. Despite the ultra modern appearance of the family winery and heuriger rebuilt in 2006, the wines remain gravity fed, unfiltered and biodynamic. “Wine requires enthusiasm and passion,” says Rainer Christ. “For making wine, there must be the deep desire to create something extraordinary”.
