What to Expect

Few white wines have achieved the fame that Riesling has in Germany. Its ability to produce a wide range of styles, from bone dry to lusciously sweet, in an even wider range of climates has made it the grape of Germany. Riesling in Germany can range from the steely, piercing wines of the Saar to the round, opulent peachy wines one typically finds in the Nahe and the Pfaltz. Every region is capable of producing both dry and sweet versions though there is a movement towards drier wines that has taken hold throughout many regions.

Winemakers Notes

The worldwide warmest year since the beginning of weather recordings created also on the Mosel a gigantic vintage with record must weights, which on average were even higher than the 2003s. Nominally, the entire harvest was almost completely in the Auslese- and Beerenauslese category. The Indian summer, which was so bright and picturesque, gave after an average year must weights in our vineyards that exploded towards the end. The 2003 vintage was stamped by a hot southern summer; whereas, the 2005 vintage was made from the autumn. The reason for the sensational high quality was naturally also read more...our reduction in yields, which gave us 26 hl/ha, so little as never before. The noble rot concentration was so tremendous that we could select 6 different Beerenauslese and 12 different Trockenbeerenauslese from our various vineyards. The high ripeness levels were in the botrytis-affected grapes for a long time. With the non-affected grapes, we pushed back the harvest till the end of October in order to avoid the many types of course and rough acidities found in this vintage. Thus, we were able to produce wines with great fullness, complexity, and depth. As compared with 2003, the 2005 vintage has clearly higher acidity, minerality, and extract. Strengthened by the very spicy and herbaceous notes, the many impressive off-dry wines taste surprisingly dry. The dry wines have character and depth, but are limited in quantities, for we wanted to avoid producing overly alcoholic wines. Finally, such a great and ample vintage can only show its full playful and aromatic spectrum in all its extravagant forms with wines containing residual sugar. From the simplest wines to the sensational choice of noble sweet wines, the unique expression of this vintage comes to the fore.    (hide)
